Print Server

Last night we installed our firewall. There were a few bugs this morning when all the departments got here and started trying to use their network programs. We have been able to resolve all of them so far except our print server is blocked from certain subnets. I have tried creating broad rules to get the firewall to allow printing to pass through between subnets, but I have not been able to create a rule that shows the print server as being online. I was on the Sophos Phone Queue for over 2 hours and they hung up on me.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

  • John,

can you add more information about your network topology, which rules you created on XG and even logs. Are you using v15 or v16?

    Thanks.

  • So as far as our topology goes, I am not sure how to best answer that question. We have our DNS and Domain Controller running a 10.0.19.1 IP address that also is our Print Server. My personal computer is on a 10.0.19.3 address and I can see the the server fine. But our subnet 10.0.23.- is not allowed to see the server. I have tried creating a rule that points a specific IP address to the 10.0.19.1 server while allowing all services. When that did not work, I created a rule that allowed all LAN to LAN service and I didnt get anything to work. I also placed these rules at the top so they were higher priority than any other rules that were created down the list. We are using the v15.

  • Hi John,

Are you seeing any blocked packets on the Firewall log between the devices on the 23 network and the 19 network for printing?

I wonder if your print server is not being found because maybe it is doing broadcasting and broadcast does not go across subnets, either that or some other protocol that may have to be allowed.

  • John,

a tcp dump output will help (tcpdupm from CLI option 5 and then 3). Have a look at the following link on how to use TCPDUMP: https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/115343

Anyway if I remember correctly, print server uses the same port as File and Print sharing services on Windows.

    Let us know.

    Thanks

  • Hi John,

Check #1 in the guide here.

    Any catch?
