Anti-virus service not running
Sounds like you may be encountering a problem that several people had a couple of months ago with both Sophos AV and Avira AV. The workaround from dempie in the following post worked for me.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. The service is not running due to the pattern files not being installed for the Antivirus.
I have followed dempie's solution and made some progress but it still fails to update after downloading.
