XG DHCP...Relay + Server Possible?

After a very long couple of days I have successfully setup an XG 85W with an AP55.  It serves both a "secure" and guest network in a lab environment.  However I had to set the XG up as the DHCP server for both my internal "secure" network and my external guest network.  I could not, even working with Sophos support, get the XG to both work as a DHCP relay for the internal network (which already had a Windows Server 2012 with DHCP role) AND to have it (the XG) function as a DHCP for the guest network.  Support was surprised that this was not workable as the UTM 9's can do this.

Is this possible on the XG or will this be enabled?

Thanks,

-Alex-

  • From what I read, VLAN DHCP Support and Tagging is available. So if you have your VLANs/NAT configured properly on your network it should work.
  • Alex,

it should work. IF you have 2 wireless networks (bridged to AP LAN for iternal users, and Separate zone) you should be able to configure DHCP relays fro first Wireless network and use XG as DHCP server for separate zone.

  • Unfortunately Sophos support confirmed it is not possible on the xg now:

    "Hello Alex,
That is correct, the UTM can have multiple dhcp servers configured at the same time as a dhcp relay, while the XG only supports one or the other at a time. The UTM isn't going to be retired anytime soon, it should have until the end of the year at the very least, and more likely until the end of 2017 or 2018, we haven't made any announcements for it's retirement yet. That function will probably be added in the next year or so to the XG, but if you submit a feature request it's more likely to be added, and will be implemented faster if a lot of people are interested in it."

Huge issue. Unusable for my clients without this. Hope this gets priority.

  • I just dropped a XG 125W into my network and was really shocked/disappointed that you cannot run dhcp relay and dhcp server at the same time...I've run watchguard X22-W, X33-W and cisco ISA570W in the past that were able to do this with ease. It's really amazing since the XG 125W is by far superior!

  • yes it's unbelivable, but it real :(
  • Same issue here..  This was the case in Cyberoam OS as well..   and simply not okay!!!

Please Sophos, come up with a solution for this ASAP!

  • Does anyone know if this has been fixed yet? I've been trying to configure DHCP relay and failing for several days now. I have Sophos DHCP Server configured for the Guest VLAN, but want to use DHCP Relay for about 12 other VLANs for each of the departments in my company. We are using Windows Server 2012 for DHCP with multiple scopes for each department but for security reasons we don't want the Guest VLAN to have any form of access to the production DHCP servers. The device is running SFOS 17.1.3 MR-3. 2 x XG330 configured in HA. Active-Active.
