Failed getting ISO Disk (USB or CD Boot)

Hello,

I am attempting to install Sophos XG Firewall on a Zotac ZBox MI542. I am able to boot multiple other operating systems (Windows Installers, Linux Installers, FreeDOS Boot Disks, XEN Hypervisor Installer, etc) from both USB and external CD-ROM.

Each time I attempt to boot the CD or USB key that contains the Sophos XG firewall, I receive an error stating "Failed getting ISO disk". This occurs on both boot media. I have re-downloaded the ISO multiple times and used both the dd and ISO writing methods on both OSX and Windows. I have converted the disk image to dmg using hdiutil, per the quick start guide, prior to using dd.

Is there something simple I am missing in order to get this ISO/installer to boot?

Josh

  • Josh,

I installed several times XG using usb disk using MAC. Following the instructions at this link will allow you to create a good bootable usb disk. Then install XG.

I am using a small 8GB disk drive.

  • Those are the same instructions I used that were referenced in the quick start guide. The USB key boots but I continue to receive the "Failed getting ISO disk" error on screen shortly after the screen displays "Starting FW installation". The only option I have is to press Y to reboot. I know the USB keys are good as they have been used to install multiple products very recently, to include XEN Hypervisor this morning.

Additionally, burning the ISO to CD also fails.
  • Joshua,

As I remember on beta test, some users had problem installing XG on some platform. Maybe your chipset is not supported.

  • Sounds good. I am going to start playing with pfSense. Thanks for the replies!
  • I had the same issue with a downloaded ISO (SW-SFOS_15.01.0_MR-1.1-407) put on a USB stick made bootable with UNetbootin. I created another bootable USB stick with UUI and had the same issue. Finally I tried one more time with Rufus 2.7 and I am now in business.

  • Thanks Dwayne, Rufus did the trick.

***NOTE: to prevent banging your head against the wall, when you click Start on Rufus it will ask you if you want "ISO (recommended)" or "DD"

    Pick "DD"

  • I'm on a PC but when I select DD Image it doesn't see the ISO, is that for MAC only?

  • Ok once I clicked to start it then detected the Hybrid ISO and gave the option for DD mode.

  • I'm having the same problem.  I purchased a new Zotac MI522 for the sole purpose of installing Sophos XG on it but after 3 days of trying various combinations of USB stick formatting options to randomly turning on and off BIOS options I'm still stuck with the "Failed Getting ISO Disk" error every time I boot.

    My setup:

Zotac MI522 Intel Core i3 (Dual NIC)

    8GB DDR3

    120GB SSD

    Connected to display via HDMI

    USB Keyboard

I understand there is an issue with the XG Installer and using HDMI so I've ordered (for another £10) a HDMI -> DVI Converter, however I'm not holding out much hope as from the other forum posts I've read this particular issue seems to occur later on in the install process.

Is there anyone from Sophos I can talk too about this?  I understand Home users are not entitled to email or phone support but right now I'm about £300 lighter and have absolutely nothing to show for it other than a significant dislike of the name Sophos :-(

  • Hi Will,

I was able to get this resolved (Had to buy different hardware) but it was for naught as I found several basic issues that I could not resolve (unable to generate new default CA, unable to edit some values on various forms throughout the firewall (chrome, safari, IE, Firefox...it was not browser/platform specific).

I have since moved on to PFSense 2.3 and am having a great time with it. I have achieved everything I wanted from XG plus more.

I hope you can figure this out as I was unable to using Zotac hardware (Same model as you).
