XG Roadmap - Still too early?

Hi All,

2016 is almost there! I think that all of us would like to have some feedback from Sophos about what we will see from 1.5 XG release (January ?) and 2.0 in the middle of this year.

Even a simple shortlist of major features that will be released and specially bug fixes. We have feature.astaro.com website but "Planned" does not means next release.

Thanks.

Luk

  • Hi lferrara,

according to my information, some one decided that version v1.5 will NOT be released. And v2.0 release is planned for mid Q2.

Unfortunately, about a planned features in v2.0 nothing new.

  • Thank you Alda.
We need to get some official public information. No way to sell XG at the moment. My hope was to sell and test XG after 1.5 (bug fixes and some new features) on some "friend" customer but the chance is very far away.
I have some potential customer that can swap to Sophos but no multiple AD support at the moment (only XG but other features are missing).
So we need to wait and be patient for still long time!

  • Hi lferrara,

I suppose you are working in some company as a Sophos partner / reseller / distributor. I can only recommend you to contact a pre-sales department, but based on my past experience with XG development, they do not know absolutely nothing concrete. And if you learn something specific, then be sure of that in less than a month, everything is different (my very last experience with v1.5).

Maybe ask Mr. Alan Toews about a short comment? He is (to me), probably the only one person who will know about the current status v2.0 and future development of new features. I ( maybe we ) could only with tears in our eyes to remember how Angelo led the UTM v9.x development.

If I compare the level of development UTM v9.x vers. XG, then I can not find any single positive thing ....

  • Hi guys, how far off are we from this roadmap from earlier this year. I can see we are already behind on UTM9.4 and also copernicus initial release seemed like it ran a little behind. In this roadmap, v2 copernicus comes almost 3 months after so hopefully it will be February/March 2016. I know Luk had mentioned a release date of end of January for v1.5, lets hope there is a 1.5 release before v2.

With all the devs from india that sophos acquired with cyberoam purchase, I hope they will follow a very aggressive update schedule but I could be wrong. Waiting on what you guys find out...

  • Hello BillyBob,

your picture is from Q1 roadmap, I think. Let's say that in the last roadmap ( October - November 2015 ) everything is compared to your picture shifted by one quarter later. Was decided that XG v1.5 is because sufficient time for the development of v2.0 canceled.

I'm sorry, but I can not be more specific. The last roadmap is under NDA, as always.

Unfortunately, my own experience with the developers of India ( during Copernicus Partner Beta ) does not fulfill me as to the quality of the development of great optimism.

  • This is some really piss poor information, I understand you may be under NDA but we need some communication from Sophos.
  • BTW, this updated XG/UTM roadmap was revealed in Sophos Community Update Webcast last week.

  • So its the same old same old 6 month expected release schedule and nothing as aggressive as was suggested earlier when SFOS was first introduced. The future sophos releases being labelled as v16 and v16.5 means it is a continuation of cyberoam although they don't like to publicize it. Also interesting is the fact that after v16, they will call it v16.5. This means that the next version of SFOS will be the final merge of UTM/ SFOS and any other missing features after that will probably need a feature request. Then they will start improving on the existing stuff and add new features to SFOS more aggressively as this will be their flagship product.

Its also interesting that 9.4 will be soft released shortly with sandbox functionality. I guess there won't be a beta for it or a very short beta if they want to release it during the first quarter as indicated in the roadmap.

Lets hope they can deliver the goodies in the next release of SFOS [;)]
  • Webcast was recorded and published on Youtube:

Beside revealing future Roadmap, there are also many other useful information from the first-hand, it is worthy spending 50-minutes watching it.
  • Sophos Community Webcast Feb 2016 - XG Firewall and UTM 9 Update:

  • That answers a lot of questions. So in essense
    1. V16 and v16.5 have nothing to do with cyberoam. They are using the year as the main version number with v16 as beginning of the year release and v16.5 as second release for the year. There will also be incremental releases within that period.
    2. The concept view of v16 SFOS looks promising.
    3. The features being added in v16 should bring SFOS very close to what UTM is for most of the users.
    4. Glad they are still continuing UTM development, although if v16 is as good as it looks on paper, more and more people will move to SFOS sooner than later.
    5. There is a beta for UTM9.4. Just noticed it posted community.sophos.com/.../74654

Thanks for the link that definitely answered a lot of questions and we don't have to speculate on some of this stuff. I wanted to attend the webcast but was busy on Thursday. I see got a few questions in. Good job.
  • This is not correct.

"1. V16 and v16.5 have nothing to do with cyberoam. "

The SFOS platform is cyberroam The V16 and V16.5 do not change that, other than Sophos hopes at that point Cyberroam is ready to replace UTM. Sophos likes to call it "merging" the platforms but really its just porting UTM features to the cyberroam platform
  • I was replying to my own conjecture from an earlier post as to why they are going with v 15, 16 and 16.5 instead of v1,2 and 2.5. What I implied in that post was that the version numbers are a continuation of cyberoam release numbers which is not correct. The release numbers for SFOS represent the year of the release of the XG software and have nothing to do with cyberoam.

The other conclusions about how much of it is cyberoam and what is UTM is pretty clear to anyone that has tried SFOS. I don't think they are hiding that fact in the webcast and clearly say that the api is all cyberoam with certain imported features like WAF etc.

In any case, the OP was talking about future of XG releases and not the origins so our back and forth is pointless.
