how to install a XG home image on a modern hardware ?

Hi community,

I bought a nice little hardware with Intel i5 11. generation and two NIC's.

My problem is that there is no way to install the XG home on it Disappointed

I tried so much:

- booting from different sticks :  Build by Rufus (also DD mode), Win32 Disk Imager, UNetbootin

- booting from CD/DVD

- with/without CSM-Support (also USB-Legacy Support)

After booting to 'SFOS INSTALLER' nothing happens Disappointed

I also testet it on an other hardware (Lenovo with same CPU), the same result.

The installation of pfSense works fine on that hardware, why is it that problem with the Sophos Image?

This is my hardware:

ZOTAC ZBOX edge M1646

CPU: Intel Core i5-1135G7

RAM: 16 GB DDR4 SO-DIMM

SSD: Kingston SSM M2. 128 GB (RBU-SNS8350DES3)

NIC: 2 x Gigabit

I hope anybody can help  Slight smile

/André

  • Thank you for the information.  So what does that mean, CSM does not work for the latest builds of XG and you can't get a newer CPU than Gen10??

  • Use a Xeon chip, better performance.

  • I am using Xenon CPUs I just can't get it to install and or boot on modern hardware.  Very frustrating.

  • Have you changed the bios to legacy mode and using intel nics, not i219 or 225 series.

  • One server has legacy boot and the software installs but does not boot up.  The other server is brand new and does not have legacy boot and the software will not even install on that machine.  I have other servers that I have tried that are older and they don't boot despite having legacy BIOS.  I found a few workstations that it will install on and boot but they are old and I need about 6-8 servers to install version 19 on and I don't want to use a bunch of old junk that I am shipping half way around the world.  I just want a new server class machine I can buy and install this software on that will consistent throughout the network.  That can't be too much to ask??

  • Hi,

if you are using a commercial licence there is no limit to hardware except the intel NICs. The server that installs but does not boot sounds ike it might have a faulty disk drive, I spent a day investigating a similar issue on my test home machine.

  • I wish it was that simple.  Brand new server, brand new disks and Intel NICs and it won't install or boot. I know UEFI is a known issue with Sophos XG but even some machines with a legacy boot will not work with Version 18 & 19.  Even with full support I am getting the run around like I am crazy.  I have been in IT for 25 years, I know it is the software not compatible with the hardware.

  • Hi,

next question are the disks in a raid array, if so the software does not support raid arrays?

  • No array just a one standard SATA drive plugged into the motherboard.  Everything brand new.  I have tried other drives and controllers but I know everything works as I ran another OS on just to be sure.
