how to install a XG home image on a modern hardware ?

Hi community,

I bought a nice little hardware with Intel i5 11. generation and two NIC's.

My problem is that there is no way to install the XG home on it Disappointed

I tried so much:

- booting from different sticks :  Build by Rufus (also DD mode), Win32 Disk Imager, UNetbootin

- booting from CD/DVD

- with/without CSM-Support (also USB-Legacy Support)

After booting to 'SFOS INSTALLER' nothing happens Disappointed

I also testet it on an other hardware (Lenovo with same CPU), the same result.

The installation of pfSense works fine on that hardware, why is it that problem with the Sophos Image?

This is my hardware:

ZOTAC ZBOX edge M1646

CPU: Intel Core i5-1135G7

RAM: 16 GB DDR4 SO-DIMM

SSD: Kingston SSM M2. 128 GB (RBU-SNS8350DES3)

NIC: 2 x Gigabit

I hope anybody can help  Slight smile

/André

  • Hi,

you need to set the bios to default mode, XG does not support uefi yet.

  • Hi ian,

but there is no default mode in the bios. Only CSM-Support, which are simulating the the legacy mode.

I hope Sophos will make a new Image that supports UEFI. The Image for the Sophos-Hardware supports UEFI,

why not the ISO for the home Image ?

  • Oh ok, if that help I will try it. I will look for an msata disk, 64 GB is big enoug, isn't it?

I will give feedback if that helps

    Thx Ian

    /André

P.S.: that Mainboard has no mSata Connection, but I will look for an Adapter

  • 64mgb will do for this experiment. Home use size recommendation is around the 120 mark.

  • I am running on a M2 disk, no problem at all, it all depends on the ability of the BIOS (and NIC's of course)

  • But depends on how your M2 device connects into the motherboard eg a PCI interface or an integrated interface which does not use the PCI services?

  • I tried everything in the bios, no chance :(

So I will test with mSata, maybe with that it works.

All other Installers (Ubuntu, pfSence, Windows) are working fine

  • Sorry for the late update:

    - tried with mSata: same issue

    - tried again with M.2 : same issue

    - tried with an other hardware (same Intel CPU 11. Generation): same issue

    - tried with older hardware : it works

So I hope Sophos will make a ISO that also works on new hardware. After all the ISO for the Sophos Hardware also uses UEFI !

It is really sad that it doesn't work

    /André

P.S. It doen't matter if I chose CSM-Support and Legacy only

  • Why don't you reach out to Zotac support?

  • Why should I do that? The answer would be "Why don't you reach out the Sophos support? ;)

Other systems like Ubuntu, WIndows, pfSense work without any problem. So the Ping-Pong Support starts ...

It is obvious the Installer-ISO, on a lenovo hardware with same CPU same issue

  • Hey, I try to help. There is a long row of threads about boot problems on the ZotacSupport website, that's the reason for my suggestion. All we can say from here: it works with some newer hardware, with others there are problems.

    It's up to you now.

  • Hi Philipp, you are right and sorry for my rough answer. It was not against you ;)

Maybe there is a way to use the Hardware-Installer on that hardware with some tricks, but not sure.

It was not so easy to find good hardware with more than one NIC and if you found it, it doesn't work :(

I will not give up and try again ;)
