Forum For Newbies

I want to protect my home network.  Sophos firewall on an older pc was recommended, so I am giving it a try.  To this point I have not succeeded in getting an installation to boot.  Previously, I posted the following:

Hey All,

I am trying to install XG Home ( SW-19.0.0_GA-317 ) on an older laptop.  Once the install is complete I reboot and GRUB loads and presents the image to be booted.  I select and hit enter and it returns a non-blinking cursor.  There it stays.

I have tried many BIOS configurations :

Boot Mode > Legacy Support and UEFI

Boot Priority > UEFI First and Legacy First

AMD Platform Security Processor > Enabled and Disabled

All with the same results through multiple installs. The only thing I can think of is that I have the wrong iso for what I want to do or AMD is not Intel enough.

Sorry about the quality of the pictures, it's the screen on the laptop

After reading many more posts I downloaded a new ISO and tried again.  This install at least got me to boot to an error message:  PXE-E61: media test failure . I have since made many changes in bios mostly with the same results.

Here is my question. Is there a forum for newbies? I have years working with OS's and hardware but need help with this.

  • Hi Donald and welcome.

there is no forum specifically for new users.

    Home use specification,

1/. Very fast quad core cpu.

    2/. 6 gb of ram.

3/. two nics, preferably intel or similar.

    4/. 60gb of disk 120 recommended.

5/. boot using legacy bios, not uefi at this stage.

xgos takes over the entire machine unless you are running a form of vm.

  • Thanks Ian,

The machine I am using is an AMD laptop with internal nic and a usb nic that meets the specs with those two possible exceptions (AMD and usb nic).  I am of the understanding that AMD is considered Intel compatible.  I will try another install tomorrow and let you know.

  • I don't have a console cable available.  Can I use a router in between pc and firewall?

  • I put a switch in between the appliance and my pc.  I have never logged in via console.  I found a page that tells me to go to https://172.16.16.16:4444 which then takes me to create a password and through a process to register using " Your XG Firewall Serial Number:"  When it seems I'm going to complete the process I get the following error:

Sorry: we are unable to register this device.

    Error ID: XG-00151

Tracking ID ...: please make a note of this.

I've tried 10 or more times.

Is there a place where I can find step-by-step documentation of the whole setup?  I've search the community and documentation but have not found what I need.  I've searched using the terms "install", "installation", "deploy" and "setup".

  • Hi Donald,

Does the XG have open access to the internet?

The serial number ws sent to you in an email, did you copy and paste?

  • yes I copied and pasted.  I'm guess that the 172.16,16,16 is into the machine that I installed the appliance.  do I need to get a usb to rj45 and console in before I can do register?

Also, is there a document with instructions to go from cd to up and running install?

  • Hi Donald,

you need an internet connection on the WAN interface so the XG can connect to the registration server.

  • Nothing changed by me, but this morning I turned it on to try again.  Now, instead of connecting to the registration server it, using the same ip address, it directs me to a user portal.  I'm not sure the registration is complete and I have not created any users.  I did create a pw as part of the registration process.

  • Hi,

you don't connect to the registration server, the XG does when it sees an internet connection.

If you are seeing the user portal you are not using 4444 in the XG admin console web access?

  • Thank you Ian.  added 4444 to address back on my chores.  I found a guy on youtube ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_BFjeRKvoA ) who did a step by step and some follow up as well.  He did the install without the internet connection.

I rebooted my machine without the internet plugged in and went through the offline config followed by reboot.  Turns out that in spite of the error messages the registration process went through, because when I logged into the web console I was already registered.
