Sophos Firewall OS 19 on SG230 with home license?

Hi,

Recently I came across a video on YouTube of someone using a SG230 in combination with Sophos Firewall OS 18 and a home license.

I've been wanting to use this for a longer time and saw a ad of a used SG230, so I took my chance and bought it.

Now unfortunately I'm running across the following issue:

The man in the video used the SW (software) ISO/image to install Firewall OS on his SG230. This was version 18.

When I try to do this with version 19, my firewall rejects it and tells me to get the proper installation media.

I have tried installing the HW (hardware) ISO and this works. However, I needed to sign in with a Sophos Central ID during the installation.

I could not enter a home license anywhere and am now unable to change any of the license details. I cannot login to Sophos Central with my Sophos ID and can't see my firewall anywhere in the portals.

Can anyone tell me if I did something wrong or if I should be able to enter my home license on Firewall OS 19 at all?

Thanks in advance.

  • When I try to do this with version 19, my firewall rejects it and tells me to get the proper installation media.

You need to wipe (delete all partitions) of the SSD before installing the software version, if you don't do this the installation media will detect the Firewall as a hardware appliance and block the installation.

You can do this with (almost) any Linux live distribution, after wiping the SSD you will be able to install the software version and use your home license.

You can't use the home license on a HW ISO, you need to use the software ISO.

  • I found the answer. It was posted over here: https://community.sophos.com/sophos-xg-firewall/f/discussions/134894/trying-to-install-xg-home-on-xg-115-rev-2-appliance

Booted up from Ubuntu and executed the command  "wipefs -a /dev/sda1". I already wiped the disk about 4 times with Windows Boot disk and GParted but that didn't seem to help. That command did solve the issue.
