Thank you for reaching out to the community, In this scenario you may create a rule above the drop rule, with action as allow and adding the explicit zone and network with explicit services you want to allow for SMTP and you are good to go !!  

OK, I see what you mean there.  However, before i do that, take a look at this (snip) i think it 'should' work,.  Sadly it takes forever to get the distant end to re-test so just waiting 

Can you share the packet capture results from the diagnostics, to see whether the traffic hits to the correct rule... 

I would if i could.  The sender of these emails is inconstant. Usually it takes 48 hours before they resend the emails in question. Unfortunately we are limited to reviewing basic logs. As of now, i have nothing to look at, as the previous attempts are no longer visible on the GUI. 

Alrighty then, if you get a chance please do capture and another option which I suggested would also work for you !!
