No Internet connection - even on Re-installation (Factory reset] on version 19 XG FW (Home Use)

Hello

I have struggled for a while with this.  And all while having serious network issues with Comcast. I have Comcast and AT&T as ISPs - and for background, I have forced their Internet cable modems / routers to have a base IP address in the 172.16.16.x range (e.g. 16.1 for one and 16.181 for another).  My goal was keeping them in the same subnet as my whole network to allow my wife to easily move cables around if the network has issues while I'm traveling.

Oddly even with a factory refresh on my home XG Firewall running on an Intel server I have (which worked fine for two years) - but I cannot find what I did to prevent this from working OTHER THAN perhaps SOPHOS will not allow the Internet connections to be in the same range.

The beginning videos for the hardware based XG suggests the Internet connection be in the 10.0.x.x range while of course SOPHOS builds around its 172.16.16.16 network.

I can go through the setup scripts but it fails registration. It will at times with the Wizard see the Gateway address (172.16.16.1) - usually but doesn't always fail the DNS but NEVER allows registration to go through.  When I ignore this and do it after setup I can ping the interface (Port 4 for example) 172.16.16.102 on the physical interface for Port 4 - but NEVER will it ping the gateway IP 172.16.16.1.

Does it matter which port I use for the Internet connection?  (e.g. hardware based says Port 1 = LAN and port 2 = primary WAN)

Does it matter what the IP address is for the ISP as long as it is not inside of the DHCP pool that SOPHOS is going to manage?

Or is this possibly my ignorance in version 19 - even though the factory reset doesn't seem to give me the ability to do this on re-installation.

Many thanks

  • Hi,

the 172.16 address range is assigned for the internal network at installation. What is the IP address of your wan interface and that should connected to your isp modem.

  • LOL - Perfect answer.  Had I slowed down on making this network change to see what happened with just ONE interface - possibly I would have realized exactly the error I made.

I moved the Comcast back to its normal 10.x.x.x space and the AT&T back to its normal 192.68.x.x space.

Everyone seems to be happy.  Well, except for the Comcast cable modem which seems to be 10x worse than the cable modem I own (though supposedly supports the higher speeds).

Many thanks ian for taking the time to respond.  Just what I needed.

  • Please investigate the XG interface settings.
