Do you know what the difference is between removing the SSD and formatting it and using a live gparted usb to format while it remains installed?

Also, do you know which type of SSD would be a good replacement drive if I were to go that route?

Hi Kevin,

first question and this my thoughts only. I suspect that when still connected to the XG it is considered a primary drive and does not allow access to all partitions where as when removed there are no access constraints.

second question. Any disk between 60 and 128 gb. Any smaller will fill up too quick, any larger and it will take too long to format during installation,

I would think that if I boot into an Ubuntu or Gparted live USB, that the internal drive on the firewall would not show up as a primary drive and could be totally overwritten. Not saying you're wrong, just trying to understand why this is happening and how to fix it without sinking any more money into this project. 

Remove the disk and perform a full format on a windows machine or a device that will write over all partitions.

So I don't have a SATA to USB adapter to format it like an external drive but I do have another laptop that I could install the Firewall drive  into. Im going to give that a try and see what happens.

From memory when working in it we used partition  magic because the windows format does not repartition a drive.

So I installed the Sophos XG's SSD into an old laptop, booted into a live Ubuntu USB with the XG's hard drive inside and formatted it a few times with gparted and re-installed it into the firewall and no luck. Still getting the same error. I sure would like to know from someone at Sophos what it is exactly that triggers the installer to throw that error. Is it the Hard Drive? If so, what condition exactly is it that has to be present on the drive or other hardware to cause that alert, and how can a home user overcome that issue.

Do you have an old laptop disk with a Sata interface regardless of size try using that. If it is a large one it will take a long time to format during installation.
