Upgrading sophos XGfirewall firmware

what is your current version? You should not loose any configuration during an upgrade. Please take a backup so you can restore if need be.

mine is 17.5.11

According to previous threads on the subject you should be able to upgrade, do take a backup before you starts.

if something goes wrong how can I downgrade the firmware

At boot time you are asked to select the version you want to run or you can do it in the gui firmware tab.

rolling back is not really a good idea because your version is going end of life eg no updates.
