Qotom Mini Q170S (8GB RAM 64GB SSD CPU J3710)

Hello all,

I would like to secure my network at home with Sophos XG. I use a VDSL line from 1and1.

I bought the Zyxel VMG1312-B30A VDSL modem to establish the Internet connection.

Now I am thinking about what I can use as hardware for the XG. In my research in the forum I have often read about the manufacturer Qotom, but also that there are often copatibility problems with the network cards.

Here is a link to my favourite model: de.aliexpress.com/.../32790213756.html

Since I only have one LAN and WAN, I selected a model with 2 NICS.

Are the 2 x Realtek RTL8111E Gigabit LAN compatible with Sophos?

Is the hardware otherwise sufficient to run Sophos XG? We are 4 people at home.

Thanks in advance for your support

Regards
Marc

  • I don’t think any of them are suitable, they are too old. Power consumption is over rated, if the device uses 10wh, that is a 100 hours for 1 kWh and how much do you pay for a kWh?

what do up you anticipate your users doing with your internet connection?

  • Hi,

this would be a better buy and improved performance with low power.

    low power 4 port firewall.

As well it uses intel NICs which will give you improved performance.

  • Thank you for the suggestion.

I have looked at all the models in the shop. Would the following model be even better? It has an Intel Celeron J4105 and DDR4 installed:

  • Most definitely better.the only question would be does it have a default bios?

  • I'm really totally unsure at the moment. The CPU seems important to me now and the energy consumption not so important.

According to this, the last model would be much better, but I have never heard of the company IKuaios before and I am always "afraid" of bad quality and conception, which can cause fire in the worst case or something similar.
    Probably a stupid thought but...

Qotom has been on the market for much longer and is apparently also often used here in the forum.

Does anyone else have any ideas about hardware or am I thinking too much?

  • I have one of those Qotom boxes and used it for a while but gave up on it because the device lacked performance when being configured. The Qotom boxes use old technology and have not updated their CPU offerings, while being under powered and work well for simple configurations. Depending on what your 4 users do and complex your configuration is will depend on performance, the other issue being increased line speed when you upgrade and XG performance with the newer versions.

My system as shown in my signature is a home built units.

For home use the recommendation is go for the fastest CPU you can buy that is not an I5 or greater model.
