XG 115 with Home License. Backup Restore failed.

Hello Everybody!!

My quick story is I have a XG115 that i got from somebody that upgraded to PaloAlto Firewall. I found the registration is not transferable due to the person i got it from does not know anything about it. So i get a home XG license nd loaded the software version version of XG on the XG115. Everything is nice and cool until I do a firmware upgrade from 18.0.1 to 18.0.3 and the system is bricked. Toast. I have a backup config before. Removed the SSD drive and found it to be below 40% life left as reported by the Transcend Application. So SSD Toast I reloaded the 18.0.1 and attempted to restore a backup and I get in a red banner "Failed to restore". I have no idea where are the logs, I don't know where to look at why this is happening, Don't know what logs to look for. I contacted Support and they kicked me off and said you don't get support because you have a free Home XG license. my license says i get enhanced support. well i guess that means no support unless you buy a hardware license for the XG115.

So i need to know what to look for on why my back up is failing to restore. I setup email backup 6 months ago and have been getting them for 6 months. Issue with that is all the other files I tried said incorrect password, and the only one that does not say incorrect password is the backup I did manually via email before the 18.0.3 upgrade to hosed my box and needed a complete drive replacement because of a weak SSD.

Any one point me in the right direction? My Friend configured it for me. I am also not familiar with Linux at all.

Thanks!!! and I really like this little unit!!

  • Hello All,

Looks like I am screwed on this unit. A Toast OS, no support from Sophos Support, they denied me because Am using free XG home, lots of backups that don't work and fail to restore. Aside from the latest backup that fails to restore, all my backups from the past 6 months all fail with incorrect password or invalid backup file. All this started from upgrading firmware from 18.0.1MR1 to 18.0.3 MR3 and you greeted with a bricked device. Now mind you the SSD was possibly on its way out with 40% life left yeah I can say that sucker is possibly dyeing and not worth using. Badblock scan comes up clean no badblocks so lots of rewrites to clean blocks. Using SFloader and loading the Firmware again does not work. Still stuck with brick device.

I will mark this as suggested answer to close this thread and I will need to rebuild and reconfigure from scratch. Its just one of those things that plague life. Oh well. My suggested answer is replace SSD and rebuild from your brains memory.

  • Hmm.... Might I Suggest in the future to avoid what happened to be is to run backups daily, weekly, and then Test them some how.
