SSL VPN does not connect after upgrade to SFOS 18.0.3 MR-3

We upgraded one of our Firewalls to SFOS 18.0.3 MR-3 from 18.0.1 MR1 and our SSL VPN clients quit working.

We get the error:

the system tried to join a drive to a directory on a joined drive

Any thoughts on the cause?

  • I had a similar issue right after upgrading from SFOS 17.5.14 MR-14-1 to SFOS 18.0.3 MR-3 the SSLVPN client could not connect it just kept looping, solution was to purge AD user in question.

    Sat Oct 17 14:03:32 2020 Connection reset, restarting [0]
    Sat Oct 17 14:03:32 2020 SIGUSR1[soft,connection-reset] received, process restarting
    Sat Oct 17 14:03:32 2020 MANAGEMENT: >STATE:1602907412,RECONNECTING,connection-reset,,,,,
    Sat Oct 17 14:03:32 2020 Restart pause, 5 second(s)

  • I also read here somewhere that only existing (AD-Synced or local) users could not SSL VPN connect anymore but new users worked. Not an acceptable solution but maybe worth a try to delete and purge one of those users and reauthenticate so that the account gets recreated.

  • thanks, yes we purged that user and it fixed the issue.

  • I migrated to MR3 and my SSLVPN is now not working right. Clients that were previously configured on a laptop and iphone are working. But new clients are unable to connect and also old clients that had their profile removed and re-added. I opened a support ticket and they want me to remove my certificate and re add it, but I don't really want to do that because I'm afraid all the old clients they are currently working will stop working.

I'm in the process now of setting my old non Sophos firewall just for SSL VPN

  • I wonder if there has been any technical background communicated by Sophos here about the many VPN issues after the recent upgrades. These problems are massive - especially in those Covid times. And something as basic as SSL VPN which has been working for at least a decade now, also with Sophos products, MUST simply work.

We will have a meeting with a Sophos senior tech where we also discuss current support quality issues and if he cannot guarantee us, that SSL VPN will survive v18.0.1 MR1 to MR3 upgrade for all users, we will surely not upgrade.

David Zambrano is already migrating it's SSL VPN Users to a different firewall. Sophos, you really must improve this product.

  • To thicken the plot, I had rolled the firewall back, with COVID remote work we cannot afford to have the VPN broken.

I got in after hours, created a test user and tested it on the old firmware, it worked, upgraded again and tested the test user I just created and it worked. Had a User test it, it worked.

To summarize I rolled it back, waited a few weeks installed the firmware again and it worked.

Not sure I am ready to test it on our HA cluster with 300 VPN users.

Any thoughts as to why this worked?
