Sophos Connect 2.0 Service not running

Deploying new Sophos Connect 2.0 to all users in our company. After a week, users are complaining about Sophos Connect client, in log there is info that Service is unavailable/Please ensure the SSL service is running. We are using SSL VPN, all policies are getting auto provisioned to users.

SSL VPN service in Windows 10 is actually running, restarting service/computer does not solve the problem. Uninstall and installation of old SSL VPN Client solves the problem.

Anyone else with the same problem, and maybe fix for Sophos Connect 2.0?

  • There are some ways on windows to protocol the reason for the service crashing.

    BTW: does Ipsec and SSLVPN not work or did you not test both? 

  • We use just new Sophos Connect 2.0 for SSLVPN. Did not try to connect over Ipsec.

  • In my case, both crashed. Could not find the reason, as the crash was caused by the windows kernel. 

    If you want to investigate this more, i could recommend https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/procdump to dump the reason, why the service is crashing. SC will restart the entire service all the time.

    I Have exactly the same problem. I'm at the point of deploying this ont 100+ machines. But now i'm no so confident doing this anymore. That's a shame because Sophos connect is perfect in all other ways.

    Does anyone had already solved this or find the cause of this crash. I will do some digging also and share my finding here. Strange fact, this only happens on the 'user' when I reinstall and test with my admin account it is working. When I reboot and let the user logon, the problem still exists.

    Obviously the Sophos connect and openvpn services are running.

  • So after 2 months since posting this problems, more and more users have this problem. For all this users I installed old SSL VPN client from portal. The old client also has problems on old Windows 10 builds with applying tunnel DNS settings.

    So old client and Windows 10 upgrade solved my problems.

    Also If you want to connect to two SSL VPN sessions at the same time, you can create another virtual adapter.

    Just "Run as Administrator" this file "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sophos\Sophos SSL VPN Client\bin\addtap.bat" and it creates new adapter.
