Can an XG 125W replace a router?

Hi, 

Besides checking they have the appropiate number of ports and features, yes, XG is the inside is a router with security features. At a glance, I don't find anything that a home/"business" grade router can do and a firewall cannot.

So yeah, go ahead, but be aware: While the XG is very easy to setup, is not "home router" easy. So, some learning is required.

We had planned on contracting with Sophos to set it up. There seems to be some confusion as to whether the appliance can replace a router.

Yes, the XG can replace a router and act as a Router and Firewall (UTM) at the same time, you can also deploy it as a Firewall only. 

XG can be deployed in:
Bridge Mode = With this option basically you connect the XG behind your current router and so the XG works basically as a Firewall.
Gateway Mode (Most Popular) = Used when you want to replace your existing Router, basically the XG does the Router and Firewall work.

And there are other two ways to deploy it

Discover mode 

and

Mixed Mode, basically configuring some ports in Bridge Mode for some subnets, while the XG keeps working in Gateway Mode.
