Coreboot compatibility issue?

Hi all. I'm trying to get the XG Firewall image file installed on a new Protectli Vault and I'm having no luck. I've burned the image with every conceivable program and have even resorted to trying it with a DVD. This is what I get:

A) Booting from Hard Drive... (and it freezes there)

or

B) Booting from DVD/CD... (also freezes there)

Am I missing something? Is it an issue with Coreboot? I'm using the HW-17.5.13_MR-13-692 iso file and have downloaded it several times to make sure it wasn't corrupted along the way.

Thanks for any advice you're able to give.

Trying to install on a Protecli Vault (FW4B) -- 8GB RAM, 120GB HDD. I'm now realizing there is a consistent kernel panic which will not let me complete installs of any OS's. I've put in a ticket with Protectli. Still confused regarding UTM, Ubuntu, etc. showing the first few seconds of boot but XG showing / loading nothing.

  • Hi,

I reviewed the product and suspect you should have chosen the AMI BIOS.

Oh my god. I thought coreboot was just something that was better designed to prevent tampering. That was the last of my budget. :'(

  • Hi,

a suggestion, try using a vm installation then install XG.

On which OS? Wouldn't that take away from the money I spent on resources for this? And wouldn't that mean placing that OS before the firewall? God I am so bummed right now.

  • Hi,

no, you download a free copy of VMware.and Then install the XG as a server on it.

  • Well, after an unnecessary restless night I have everything working perfectly thanks to the folks at Protectli. I reseated the HDD and RAM and cleared the CMOS. You also could have told me that the iso I mentioned at the beginning of this post was for Sophos equipment only, not third party lol. To sum up - the XG works perfectly fine with coreboot (not sure if you were implying it was something you tested personally when you said it wasn't compatible). I sure hope this thing is worth it after all this hassle! :P

  • I never advised it was not compatible, that was your assumption. You never indicated which version of XG you were trying to install.

I am pleased to see you have it working.
