You can purchase what is a called "Software XG" license.  This will enable you to install SFOS onto any hardware you choose.  However if you install using the Home license, you will need to reinstall from scratch when migrating to the enterprise license.

So, when I install SFOS, I need to do a "Trial" license and then I can simply add the enterprise license afterwards?  What happens to the appliance if the trial license runs out before I get an Enterprise license?  I assume that it will fall down to just the base firewall functionality.  Is that a correct assumption?

Yes that is correct.  Trial license and then apply enterprise license afterwards.

The appliance will stop receiving updates, any web filtering rules configured with any protection will stop doing the protection and allow all traffic.

It will act as a simple firewall without any updates.
