Cannot boot into Software Installer (SW-17.5.7_MR-7)

Hello,

I am running an oVirt set up and have been trying to create a VM of Sophos XG Home Edition. I've downloaded HW-17.5.7_MR-7-511.iso, SW-17.5.7_MR-7-511.iso, and SFOS_OSS-17.5.7_MR-7-511.iso. When creating trying to run the virtual machine only HW shows up in the Run Once drop down, implying it is the only one out of the three that is bootable. Of course, this ISO is useless for trying to install sophos onto a hyper-visor as it's meant for the pre-built hardware products.

I then tested SW and SFOS on Hyper-V on my local to make sure that the problem wasn't oVirt and Hyper-V comes up with a screen saying it cannot find a bootable image on either of them.

I've been reading around the forum and see there are a few posts of different versions of the SW iso that aren't and are bootable and it seems to be a general issue that plagues the SW and SFOS iso from time to time. Does any one have a resolution for this or may have an iso that they know works that they could send my way?

Thank you.

  • Hi,

there is a vm ovm file to use. The software ISO does install on VMs, I had run one for a number of years and decided not to continue because the VM was too power hungry and providing poor network response.

Sounds like what ever you are connecting to your VM is not configured correctly. Are you using a DVD/cd or a USB stick to run the install?

  • On Windows I'm just using Hyper-V, on oVirt internally it's using KVM. No physical media needed. They both attach as a virtual CD-ROM but don't see the ISO as bootable.

  • Hi,

you will need to convert it to bootable version. Straight ISOs do not install.

  • ISOs do install, that's how I've installed everything else in my infrastructure on oVirt and on Hyper-V. That's the general practice is to use ISOs on PXE server or from an ISO library locally for your hypervisor. That's how people install operating systems on oVirt, ESXi, and Hyper-V.

As I said, the hypervisor attaches the ISO as a virtual CD-ROM and the HW image does boot, it's the SW and SFOS images that don't boot, supposedly do to corruption or missing a boot flag.

There have been several posts on the forum about this issue with the SW installer missing boot flags or just not being bootable at all even through burning to a DVD or flashing to a drive.

If you have an image that you know works, that's what I'm looking for, or for the developers to come out with a fix for the current ISO.

  • You must be doing something wrong then, bevause I installed from sw-17.5.6_mr-6-488.iso after burning it to a CD..

  • And why do you do not download the virtual installer with preinstalled ovf files?

They have everything already in place.
