Which Hardware should I use ?

Hello,

iam sorry for asking, but every thread i have read was not up date.

So I would like to ask if someone can recommend some low power consuption Hardware for a Sophos XG firewall.

What are the requirement to the firewall?

- Up to 6 Users surfing

- Web filtering

- Email (IMAP / SMTP) filtering

- establish a ppoe Connection ( 100 / 40 Mbit)

- VPN ( Clients to Server - up to 2 Users at the same time)

- VPN ( Side to Side - one connection)

- VLANS

Thanks for helping

Mario

  • Hey Mario,

The Sophos Sizing guide would suggest something like XG106 or XG115 as I wouldnt recommend the XG86

My experience is go as big as you can afford as it gives you many more resources to activate the full stack of features and security. Have you checked out the price difference between each of them and maybe the XG210?

We have an XG230 but replaced with XG450 due to the XG230 not handling the load we threw at it.

Also plan for any additional sites or additional users.

  • Hi,

is this a home or office use?

  • Hi, thanks for the reply.

It is an home use project, so iam thinking about some consumer hardware.

    Thanks a lot

  • Hi,

for home use have a look at my signature. Uses about 20w except at boot time. I use a small server motherboard.

If you want high throughput you will need to disable the power saving functions in the BIOS.

  • Hi at all,

Same question here - Think I got a nice deal of by Amazon for Home use.

HUNSN Firewall, Mikrotik, VPN, Network Security Appliance,Router PC,Intel Quad Core J1900,(Gray), RS17,[4 Intel Gigabit LAN/2USB/1VGA/Fanless/2 Reserved Fan],(4G RAM/32G SSD)

Since the limitations for home use are 4 cores and 6 GB Ram - I would like to ask how much throughput the appliance will have with the current XG Firmware.

    I have a 1Gbit Internet Connection DS-Lite.

    1 PC

    1 PS4

    1 Smart TV

    1 Android TV (NVIDIA Shield)

    1 Pi-Hole DNS

    Sincerely

    Eli.

  • Hi,

for that small number of network devices it will work, but you will not hit 1gb/s download. The CPU speed is the limiting factor.

  • The Qotom Q335G4 is a great option for home use. I’m running the Core i5 -5250U and it easily achieves 1GB throughput without IPS enabled. With IPS enabled, it drops to around 300-400 Mbps for a single connection. I believe the limiting factor is the version of Snort in Sophos XG does not support multi threading. Snort 3.0 or Suricata support multi threading but who knows if/when Sophos XG will implement those.

  • Thanks for the Feedback it helps allot on finding the Firmware of Firewall I would like to use.

    Sincerely

    Eli.
