Where is V18 at?

Hi,

this request for an update on progress is for those of us that do not have access top partners/resllers.

Would some-one in the know who is allowed to provide progress on v18 please add to this thread.

I am not after guesses or conjecture, but real timelines (give or take a month).

Ian

  • While understand what you are saying the document could be a mockup because the version number is not the normal Sophos format.

  • This reply was deleted.
  • Because normal format for XG is v18.0.2 mr-2

Unless Sophos have moved away from calling them MRs?

  • ***UPDATE***

Access to the public beta of v18 has been delayed till end of the month.

  • Also can confirm this :-(

    Response was "Later october..."

    Dammit!

  • Hi,

    Latest news from Sophos:

    "Targeted Timeline

The team is targeting to kick off the Early Access Program (EAP) for all Sophos customers and partners later this month. We will announce the availability here on Sophos News when everything is ready. To provide everyone with a fantastic EAP experience, the team is working hard to ensure the features in the initial EAP release are rock solid, so we appreciate your patience.

The XG Firewall v18 Early Access Program will have multiple phases over the coming months with some features, noted in the What’s New Overview, delivered as part of later EAP phases.

We hope you are as excited about this new XG Firewall release as we are. Thanks for your ongoing support."

    Regards

  • With all these delays they should just skip the v18 name and call it v19.

  • As this is a complete re-write of the underlying architecture - might bet better for them to call is Sophos XG Pro V1

  • I don't know about you guys, but personally I can't wait for this one:

    Bring it on, Sophos :)

  • I've got my eyes on updated MIB's and this nugget:

    High Availability (HA) Enhancements

New enhancements enable plug-and-play high availability deployments with greater flexibility and business redundancy. A preconfigured HA port on every device enables quick and easy HA deployments by simply connecting the two ports together and then acknowledging and activating HA.

HA configurations also include a configurable failback strategy, ideal for remote-site HA deployments, with options for manual synchronization and time out tuning. It is now possible to perform firmware updates, rollbacks, and other tasks such as port monitoring lists and assigning multiple IP addresses to primary and auxiliary appliances while HA is active. In addition, deploying more than one HA pair in a single network is easier due to the elimination of conflicts arising from any dependency on a virtual MAC address HA architecture.

    Thanks,

    John

  • I do not really mind if the release data has been moved to another date. TBH I really that Sophos does not fail this time. Features sets? I do not really mind too...Sophos has spent at least 2 years to move to another very MAJOR release as v18 and I really hope that they change the core and putted some "orders" inside the XG as now it is a messy product. If you dig down in the advanced shell in some files or just only on the cli commands, you can see that some commands run under system and others under set or show...Every Product Manager or a Technical Lead would complain on that.

Understanding the log is still a nightmare and I do not even spent words on live connection tab compare to "flow monitor" on UTM 9 or any other monitoring tool available on other products.

Regarding the community, I could complain for years. I am not a contributor anymore as I do not like how the Sophos Staff here "listen" to problems that people have. I see more copy and paste of KB and only few times a very deep knowledge is given to users.

In the last exam I took at University, I took the "Multimedia communication and Crossmedia" and I can tell you the story of why online community were born. Community were born for 2 main reasons:

    • Users created community to complain the help-desk service of the product
    • Users created community to complain decision taken by the Organisation

And since here Sophos is right (for the first point)...The point is that in the last decade, people are complaining more on online community that directly via mail, phone and other methods and several modern sociologists say: "if the Companies will not start to listen to community users, the product will fail!"

I complained on XG since September 2015 (I was one of the first user here on the XG section) and the result is that after 4 years, we are still here complaining about the product and stil waiting.

I really hope that Sophos listened to our feedebacks.

For Sophos staff here: do not put personal opinions and try to listen and give proper feedbacks to people here. Bugs reported by people shall be tracked back since I have seen many threads were "Give me your case ID and I will investigate" and no answers were gave back to Community. Many System Admins are using the Community to find the answers before taking the phone and calling the support. Make sure to handle proper case, track the issue and inform the community.

Regarding the ideas.sophos.com XG section, the Product Owner or who is responsible for, shall keep the ideas updated (under review, planned and so forth). I do not where you leave, but this is what we see from outside point of view.

People are still experiencing issues from many releases and you are not listening. I personally have issue with Sophos Client Authentication Agent on MAC (when I turn the computer on, I have to wait for a minute, before the icon becomes orange, to connect) and still daily report that arrives each day at different time. So I can I even propose XG on public tender? I advised my customers to stay on UTM 9 or to move to other vendor because the XG instability and the non-linearity of the product is shown even during the trial after 10 minutes.

I am a Computer Engineer so I try to find the "needle in the haystack" but maybe people like me  would never have made a product bad like this.

Dear Sophos: if you created the core like you did with UTM9 or like Cisco IOS back in the days, you will win otherwise XG will fail more than soon. When Sophos acquired Surfright I said to Sophos's sales I personally know that: with Surfright, in a couple of years, you will have the best endpoint on the market...the rest is history!

So let's wait for the v18 and to Sophos staff start listening really and not copy and paste and stop disappearing on issues. Report bug ID and when the bug will be fixed, as in the backlog, priorities are given and you know the release date when the fix will be fixed (sometime the release version could change, but as soon you know, please report "it will be fixed in MR number xxx).

We are all in the same boat!
