What does the # mean? Port forwarding not working?

I have 2 port forwards, 1 works and 1 does not.

I have tried cloning the working one and I have tried setting up from scratch.  I can't figure it out.

The Plex-QNAP rule doesn't work.

The Plex-Desktop rule works great.

One thing I notice is Plex-QNAP just says "Plex-QNAP" for the WHAT column.  "Plex-QNAP" is what I called the service.

The Plex-Desktop rule says "#Plex-Desktop, 32401 [TCP]" for the WHAT column.  You can see this below in the service screenshot

What does the # sign mean and why does the Plex-Desktop rule indicate the TCP port and the Plex-QNAP does not?  I tried to add the # to the Plex-QNAP service name, but Sophos says it isn't a valid name.  How did it get on the Plex-Desktop Service then?  If I edit and try to save "#Plex-Desktop" service, it too says it it not a valid name with the # sign in front.

  • Hi,

How comes your opening 2 ports for Plex? Do you have 2 plex servers running then??  I assume you have changed the remote access port on your Plex Desktop instance then? You normally only see # on ports, did you create Ip Host records on XG for both Plex servers IP's?  How many LAN ports are you using??  Also on DNAT business rules the # only shows up in the Destination host drop down as thats where you specify which Port/alias/vlan should listen for the specific port you specified?  I assume your only setting your WAN port in both rules for the destination host and the actual target host in the Protected host drop down, the Protected host field is where you should be selecting your IP host records?

Your rule should be Any as source then the Destination host is where the source hits so for plex its WAN and then your WAN port with its ip then the protected zone will be LAN then protected host is the LAN ip of the server.

Could you screenshot your actual rules pls? Also take a look at your hosts and services page on XG and see if the # is actually in the IP host record you created?

  • Hi Roger,

Based on the details, I presume you have 2 different Plex unit inside your network and will be accessed outside your network via 75.134.114.117 with ports 32400 for QNAP and 32401 for Desktop. Now only the Plex-Desktop is working while the other is not.

I advised checking first the log viewer. Add a filter with Dst. IP field with the value set on your Destination host. From there, you will have the visibility of the related traffic and will have the idea of where to start the troubleshooting.

Let us know your current findings also you can share your current configuration for us to help.
