XG makes me feel inferior to UTM - Network rules, etc...

So, I am REALLy trying to give XG a chance, and with UTM, I had no problems setting up what I needed for port forwarding, NAT, whatever.  It was a simple interface.

After trying XG, because I am so unfamiliar with this, it makes me feel foolish like a monkey handling a football.  For the life of me, I cannot seem to get any network rule applied.  Because of that, I plan on taking down XG tomorrow and going back to UTM.  The videos don't have what I need, and I haven't found anything online good enough to show me visually what I need to do.

The interface, yes is simple.  Yet, is more NON-user friendly than UTM is, and UTM is so much more understandable!  I'm just trying to get a simple port forward for two ports I've defined to pass through to a specific server in my LAN.  What I think I set up correctly, isn't even set up at all the right way, and essentially seems like this is lying to me, lol.

Sorry about the frustration, but this really isn't how something that's supposed to be "so simple" should be.

  • Welcome back,

are you using a business rule for the your server access? Are you re-writing the ports to something like 1:65535 to 2099 or something similar?

  • I've tried both the network/user rule and the business application rule.  After creating my ports, I try to make sense (which should be self-explanatory) of the destination and source.  It's even at the top position of the rules, as this is the first rule I'm trying to make in order to understand this thing.

The rule doesn't work and shows no traffic, verifying the rule isn't doing anything which to me makes perfect sense.  I've been at this for hours, and so frustrated with it, I just feel like chucking this thing out and going back to what I know and can use efficiently.

  • Please post a copy of your business rule and I will see what I can provide information on. My business rules experience is limited.

  • Hi Amodin,

Kindly specifically state what you want to achieve and I will walk you through a video session.

  • Sorry guys, I went back to UTM.  Other things I needed are just not there yet with XG, and I was frankly done boxing with this product and needed some core things up and running.  I've been familiar with UTM since 6, so I went back.  ;)  Maybe I'll try it in another way at some point.

I didn't bother with an import this time for UTM and went fresh.  Yes, sucks rebuilding everything back, but I had the same problem with XG, and then some.

  • Hi Amodin,

you can't import SG the configuration into XG. One of the strong points of the XG and does work well is the firewall rules, they are very flexible.
