Migration UTM to XG

Hello,

I am interested in switching to the XG. Questions:

- Is it worth switching from UTM to XG from now on?
- If not, is it worth migrating from version 18?
- When will version 18 be available?
- What are the current problems with XG that I don't have with UTM?

My setup is for private branches (home version) - do I have to consider something here?

Thank you very much for your feedback.

Best regards

  • Hi,

if you have more than 50 devices on your network, if you want application filtering, if you have multiple eternal networks then the XG is for you otherwise stay with the UTM until v18.

V18 is supposed to be released later this year.

There is no migration tool for home users. You will need to build a completely new configuration.

IPv6 works better on a UTM.

If you want to learn about the next generation of firewall setup then the XG is for your.

  • Hi rfcat_vk,

    Thank you for the replay.

How works the web filter and the qos on the firewall xg? Are there any differences between UTM and XG? Thank you for your help.

  • Hi,

there are differences in the way the web filter works because you also have a separate application filter. To get the full benefit of the web and application filters you need to enable http/s scanning and install the XG CA on all devices.

On the XG you can setup different (web, IPS, application etc) policies for each firewall rule.

    QOS is different.

There is a very good series on how to setup an XG in the KBA. Flo recently posted a link in these forums which I can't find at the moment.

  • Hi,

In this case, I don't have to worry when I using the above features (web filtering, SSL interception, QoS, application control) with Sophos XG? Or are there any limitations compared to the Sophos UTM?

    Best regards

  • Since you have UTM, I would say do not touch XG before v18 is released next year (mid 2020).  Do not hope to see v18 this year.

Or look at other products available.  Moving to XG will certainly not gonna be easier than going to anyone else.

It becomes a matter of budget, who supports you (what local IT shops sells), speed required, et.c.

    Good luck.

  • Do not use XG 17.x

This Produkt has some design flaws (for the last two years) and some of the basic features stopped working in the latest two releases.

Simple feature that are working fine in UTM are missing at all.

  • Ok, I will keep my hands off it at the moment, too many persons recommend staying with UTM. I'm a little surprised about the feedback. Thanks a lot for the answers.
