Port 1 on XG125 is dropping causing browsing and VPN issues

XG125

SFOS 17.5.0 GA (issue also exists with prior versions of SFOS)

The LAN port (port 1) on the XG125 was/is dropping out frequently

The connection (right) light goes out.

I replaced the switch, cables, and internet modem.

It was the internet tech that noticed the port dropping.

This causes browsing to either fail, go very slow, or partially load pages.

VPNs also are affected where they drop as often as every few seconds.

My thought was to bypass port 1 by assigning the static IP of port 1 to port 4 and assigning port 4 to the LAN zone. (I also changed port 1 to another static IP in the same subnet)

Both port 1 and port 4 are cabled to the same new switch

When I did the above I noticed that

I can only ping port 4 if I have a cable plugged into port 1

I can ping port 4 even if I don’t have a cable plugged into it as long as port 1 is plugged in

   i.e   I can’t ping either port unless I have a cable in port 1

This defeats the purpose of bypassing port 1 and the dropping issue.

Right now (after hours) browsing and VPN seem ok but gut tells me I am going to have problems when I walk in tomorrow.

I am afraid to disable port 1 since it seems like I will lose management from the LAN if port 1 is not cabled.  I am not familiar with the alternate methods of managing the XG125 and was hoping to avoid the learning curve.

Any thoughts on bypassing port 1 or why port 1 has to be cabled in order to reach ping port 4.

I am able to repeat the issue 100% of the time.

I have been trouble shooting for a week.

Thanks in advance

  • Hi

Is your Port1 in a bridge interface with other ports?

Also, have you already opened a support case for this issue?

    Regards,

  • Thanks FloSupport

I did not create a bridge

It would be a one way bridge since only bridging from port 1 to port 4, no?

Port 1 and Port 4 are in the same LAN zone

I don't know what happens behnd the scenes when assigning ports to the same Zone

Note: the LAN traffick is working well with port 1 and port 4 in the same subnet and both in the LAN zone.

I was skepitcal about what woud happen under normal load but the issues seems to have been bandaged.

Leaves me uneasy though since I think port 1 is still an issue

Traffic is probably failing over to port 4.

  • Hello Jake,

If the firewall is in gateway mode then you cannot use the same subnet on two interfaces. If you plan to use the same network then you would need to bridge the two interfaces and that would result as a bridge configuration.

I don’t understand why the LAN activity is now working with port 1 and 4 on the same subnet and LAN Zone

    192.168.2.XXX

Based on your comment I should have no connectivity on the LAN zone

Where would I check to see if the ports are bridged.

I did not bridge them but maybe firewall did it when I put both ports in the same Zone

I really don’t want 2 ports on the same subnet.

My goal was to setup Port 4 as the LAN Port and disable Port 1 because Port 1 was dropping the connection and causing major browsing and VPN issues.

When attempting to make this configuration I discovered I could not access Port 4 unless I had Port 1 connected.

Strange behavior if you ask me but forces me to leave Port 1 connected.
