  • The Sophos XG can be successfully installed on a Sophos UTM 120 rev. 5 (2GB RAM) appliance but it was bit tricky!

The CDROM was found and accepted as boot medium but the appliance was catched in a boot loop. So I was forced to flush the BIOS configuration (via jumper setting on the mainboard) to get it boot from the CDROM. After that trick the installation was possible and successful.

Then I faced the next problem: The appliance was up and via ICMP reachable, but TCP4444 was definitely down. I rebooted the device servel times and later on I just waited about 10 minutes and then TCP4444 became surprisingly reachable.

    Now the XG works fine.

  • I've (re)installed Copernicus/XG many times since the first published Beta version (August 2015), on my office UTM 110/120 device.

    Advices from my experience:

    - There is no need to use external CD/DVD device, burn the ISO image on an USB key.

    - Use Win32 Disk Imager software for that task, don't experiment with Rufus and others (suggested from managers/developers during Beta phase on old astaro.org forum).

    - UTM120 is very slow, so it is normal to experience latency between ping and accessing web console. Be patient, it can last several minutes. I was also being nervous in first couple times, doing hard reboots...etc...until realized that it is normal for XG initialization on this appliance..;). If you have VGA monitor connected directly you can see that boot procedure (admin prompt) is being finished in less than a minute, but that is misleading. If you login and press any menu button you will be presented with message "Please wait, system is still initializing".

    - Ports are reversed, as already mentioned here.

  • - Connect the keyboard also, if your screen goes black (and it will during creating Reporting partition), press any key to get the picture back.
  • Using the Software version or Hardware version? When I tried to install the software version of UTM on my SG it displayed an error and told me to install the hardware version...
So I had to install the hardware version then delete the asg file to use my home license.. same case with XG?
  • There is no SG 120 appliance, Marc was mentioning old UTM 110/120, if I understood correctly.
  • I have installed the software version on the UTM 120 rev. 5 and there was no order to use the hardware version. Maybe because I have deleted all partitions first?

  • I have tested the NWA-6305 Firewall Appliance from Quanmax with XG Software for Home Use.

    •Intel® Bay Trail Processors
    •2x DDR3L SO-DIMM Socket
    •4x GbE, 1x COM, 2x USB 2.0, 1x USB 3.0, 1x VGA
    •Cost effective Network platform solution
•Flexible Software Control BypassFriendly LED indicators (Software status, Alarm)
    •1x 2.5" SATA HDD/SSD, 1x mSATA
    •Extended temperatue model available: -20°C ~ 60°C
  • I did the same on my UTM 120 Rev 5.. I powered off my Hardware UTM 9 version and installed the Software XG without deleting any partitions. So i guess it doesn't matter.
  • XG installer should wipe all of the partitions anyway (there is a warning to accept before continuing).

p.s Nobody here mentioned Beethoven "Per Elisa" theme from UTM120 internal beeper, after the installation was finished....it scared me the first time...[;)]

  • Yeah, when i heard the Beethoven song for the first time I thought "Sophos what the f**k?" :D

try to boot the ISO from an USB-stick... the speaker will flipp out ^^

I've always used Win32 Disk Imager for this task, as suggested on the forum during Partner pre-release and Beta phases.

One would expect some beep-ing immediately after the powering the device, but not after 30 minutes while sitting alone in an low-light office environment,  with the device starting to beeps Beethoven melody...[;)]
