Initial setup issues of XG 125w rev.2 hardware appliance

I am unable  to ping the device on 172.16.16.16, I have tried to connect wan port to my netgear router and straight to the modem. I have tried static assign my network adapter, I have tried to dhcp. Nothing appears to work.

  • Hi,

the external port should be connected to your internet device, try without nether router in place. When you connect your PC to the internal connection you should be assigned an IP address, check your PC LAN card is set to auto detect connection type/speed.

  • Hello,

Sounds to me like your friend may have done some Configuration in the unit.

I would suggest connecting to the console port using the serial port cable, running Putty and powering the unit up to see what is displayed.

Also remember that by default the web console is blocked on the WAN interface. Also the default on the lan interface is https://172.16.16.16:4444

  • I would agree with that statement, other than since I could never register the device. It was impossible to touch the configuration file. Sophos even states device has never been registered. Is there a way maybe to just reinstall the software. Or factory reset the configuration. I tried to hold the factory reset button in for 30 seconds but nothing changed.

  • Hello

Connect a computer directly to the Sophos Lan port.

Remember that you may need 10 minutes from Powerup to operational if you have attempted a factory reset.

Set a static IP of 172.16.16.17/24 on the computer

See if you can ping 172.16.16.16

If you can then try to log into the unit at https://172.16.16.16:4444

if not then you will need to use the console port to see if it may be in maintenance mode.

  • I get no response from 172.16.16.16 it is weird though. the first ping states destination host unreachable from 172.16.16.17, then the next 3 pings time out.

I have a console cable connected serial to USB. system config shows connected to com5, I set speed to 38400 and the rest default settings. connection opens but I never receive any information, just stays on black screen.

  • Hello

At a guess the unit may be in recovery mode.

Also think you have an issue with your com - usb adapter.

Do you have another serial device you can test the adapter and terminal emulator with?

If its ok, set speed, then boot the XG with the terminal window open.
