How to see hostnames in reports?

I have an XG210 running at a small business. They are interested in receiving reports weekly of traffic, and the request is for hostnames to be visible in the reports. I have been scowering the forums trying to determine the best way to go about this, but I am more confused in doing so. Can someone please help me understand the best method for getting hostnames instead of IP addresses?

Hi,

are you using any AD features in the XG and are the users allowed open access?

You will need to create the users in XG client or clientless tabs.

I used to see hostnames in the reports but never had users set up. I thought all I did was to make sure that the primary (or secondary DNS might work too not sure) for your endpoint and servers is set to the LAN ip of the firewall. Wouldn't this make the devices auto register wiIh the xg? I had this but when I rebuilt dhcp I forgot to hand out xg IP as a DNS server. I aim to fix mine soon too

Thank you for your reply. I am still fairly new to sophos, so what you are asking, I don't have answers for. Can you please explain a bit more? What AD features can I use / should be set up?

The auto register is only the IP address, not the name of the device, not the user name unless you are using AD authentication to access the internet via the XG.

I would love to have a positive answer for you, but this issue has been present since the general release of v15 the SFOS product in 2015. I have opened a support request, reported a bug, posted and responded to other requests in this forum (such as https://community.sophos.com/products/xg-firewall/sophos-xg-beta-programs/v16beta/f/sfos-v16-beta-issues-bugs/78162/report-does-not-report-hostname/339648 ), tried advocating for a feature request ( https://ideas.sophos.com/forums/330219-xg-firewall/suggestions/16036801-resolve-private-ip-addresses-in-reports-to-hostnam ) and we are still nowhere, nearly 3 years later. I still have an open issue with the development team ( NC-11142 ), had private conversations with Sophos personnel, and still nothing. Alan Toewes has marked the feature request for this as "Already Possible", yet months later the support engineer working on my case asked me to raise a feature request (??!).

According to the product team, if your Sophos XG points to a working internal DNS server with working reverse DNS lookups, this should work - but it doesn't work in reports, and never has.

I hope that one day Sophos will treat our customers' requests with some sincerity or respect, but after nearly three years of trying to get resolution to this problem, I've pretty much lost faith.
