Sophos Enterprise Console wont update - with a twist

Hi on my server the admin password was changed, and ever since we've not been able to download new updates. We've gone through the necessary steps to fix this although another issue is that the account SophosSERVER-010 Used for download of Sophos Updates has also been changed, we believe this to be the issue as to why we still cannot update. - cannot contact server when trying to update

I've cleaned out the update log then ran a update so you get only the necessary info, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

Is the twist PureMessage?  If it's running PureMessage, you would need to ensure that AutoUpdate is configured to update from Sophos at least as a secondary location such that it can get the spam rules.

You should be able to define an updating policy in SEC for this client which has Sophos as the secondary.

    Hope that's it!

    Regards,

    Jak

  • Yes it has PureMessage installed and configured to update from Sophos, i think the issue might be with the account SophosSERVERname010 account having it's password changed in AD, would this require a password change in other locations?

Or is it possible to reset it to it's default password (what password are the accounts given by default?)

    :26853
  • HI,

So if the password for the account referenced here

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\[Wow6432Node]\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Service\

which by default the "SophosSAU<machinename><number>", is changed? In the alc log you (Launch SAV - on the main page you can see "view updating log" ) I would think you will have the error:

    Time: 11/07/2012 08:33:12
Message: There was a problem while establishing a connection to the server. Details: LogonUser ("[Account]", ".", ...) failed A Windows API call returned error 1326
    Module: CIDUpdate
    Process ID: 40296
    Thread ID: 10504

"net helmsg 1326" gives :"Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password."  which makes sense as I just put into the registry a different account name.

In the trace Alupdate log you also see:

Which I don't see in your log.

Typically this "SophosSAU" account is created automatically with a random password but you can set this account up before you install as per: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/48910.aspx.  The advice here is to set "ObfuscatedPassword" to 0 and then secure the key such that only Administrators and System have access.  So you could set the same key and enter the password in clear, then secure the key.

Sadly ObfuscationUtil.exe, the SEC tool doesn't generate a obfuscated password that can be used here it seems.

  • Hello Taysr,

AFAIK only DCs use an AD account for the AutoUpdate impersonation (this would be the SophosSERVERname010). Anyway, if it'd be invalid (or locked out) the download from your primary server wouldn't work (I see Jak has already pointed this out). Dunno how the log should look like but to me it seems it doesn't try the secondary location (Sophos) for downloading the PMSR package at all. Is it indeed set?

  • Hi Taysr,

For the record, this post is a bit of a milestone for SophosTalk: number 10,000 in the Endpoint forum. Thanks for joining the community.

  • OK...

I've fixed a couple issues now I believe i'm stuck on the last hurdle....

So in Enterprise Console when trying to update the Update Manager i get the following error:

Unable to write to the distribution location \\serverpath\sophosupdate for software subscription 'Recommended'.

I've checked permissions and can access the path fine...

Then when i try to update the Sophos Endpoint Security and Control it updates fine..

I've checked registry, and the iconn fle to confirm the right account is being used... Any ideas?

  • Hello Taysr,

I assume the Update Manager has successfully written to the CID at least once if you can update from it. The client's AutoUpdate configuration files don't come into play here - SUM doesn't use them.

A quick fix could be to empty the CID and let SUM rebuild it. It might be that you encounter problems when trying to delete the contents - this would be the same error that SUM also encounters and which prevents a successful update. Another option is to check the SUMTrace logs for errors - searching for error or boost:: will most of the time indicate the significant message(s) in the log and the fix obvious.
