Query regarding upgrade from 9.5 to 10

Hi, folks

I will be upgrading Sophos Enterprise Console this Friday. Last time I upgraded I had to back up the SQL database as per the recommendation of the upgrade advisor. I understand the upgrade advisor is built into the installer, and will follow the recommendations, but wanted to know if there is anything I can do to prepare for the installation and to guard against installation failure (as happened the last time I upgraded).

Any tips?

Thanks

Mark

It's always worth taking a back up the "in use" SOPHOS database before starting

I'd be suprised you have a problem.

I strongly subscribe to the first statement and I subscribe to the second as well - although I was indeed surprised as I did have problems upgrading (from 9.7) on both our production servers. Now having a backup available often means you don't need it :smileywink:. In fact I could correct the problems without restoring the databases. One upgrade failed during database install (local, so it doesn't apply to your situation) and at a point where it left the machine in limbo - the installer refused to be run again. The second upgrade went fine but then the Management Service refused to start as it failed to connect to the (also local) database. As a workaround I've added the database user to the Administrators group.

As I said, I did not expect major problems and still believe that they are rare. Not data was lost in both cases and I took no longer than half a day to complete the upgrades (yes - half a day for both together, not each). The machine with the bigger problem has a long history (first install was SEC3.0) and is also shared with another application using SQL. So the failure is perhaps not the installer's fault at all.

    Good luck, Mark
