Query regarding upgrade from 9.5 to 10

Hi, folks

I will be upgrading Sophos Enterprise Console this Friday. Last time I upgraded I had to back up the SQL database as per the recommendation of the upgrade advisor. I understand the upgrade advisor is built into the installer, and will follow the recommendations, but wanted to know if there is anything I can do to prepare for the installation and to guard against installation failure (as happened the last time I upgraded).

Any tips?

Thanks

Mark

  • HI,

It's always worth taking a back up the "in use" SOPHOS database before starting, i.e.

    SEC 4.0 - SOPHOS4

    SEC 4.5 - SOPHOS45

    SEC 4.7 - SOPHOS47

You can either use the backupdb.bat file provided by Sophos or just use the SQL tools.  It is worth mentioning that the existing database is always left on ann upgrade so unless the upgrade completely takes out the SQL instance, you'll always have the previous database as it was prior to upgrade.  So you can easily restore/retry.

Note: The new DBs created will be SOPHOS50 and SOPHOSPATCH.

Once backup is done, you can run the new installer on the DB machine to create the new databases mentioned above.  As this just creates the 2 new blank databases, the existing SEC will still work.  no risk here. The existing "Sophos DB Admins" group will be left.

Once you're ready to upgrade the Management Server machine you can run the installer on that machine.  The new installer consists of a setup.exe (This makes all the checks and takes in all the parameters) and then runs the various MSIs passing the properties.  During the install of the Server component, it will call the UpgradeDB.exe tool which will copy the data from your current live database, i.e. SOPHOS4x and move it into the new SOPHOS50.

The experience in my opinion is much smoother the way it's now componentised.  I'd be suprised you have a problem.

The only thing I'm aware of to check is that you're not currently using a clear text password in the registry of the management server, http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/116519.html .

    Otherwise I find:

    http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/topics/1750
Is a good source of info on SEC 5 in regard to problems.

I strongly subscribe to the first statement and I subscribe to the second as well - although I was indeed surprised as I did have problems upgrading (from 9.7) on both our production servers. Now having a backup available often means you don't need it :smileywink:. In fact I could correct the problems without restoring the databases. One upgrade failed during database install (local, so it doesn't apply to your situation) and at a point where it left the machine in limbo - the installer refused to be run again. The second upgrade went fine but then the Management Service refused to start as it failed to connect to the (also local) database. As a workaround I've added the database user to the Administrators group.

As I said, I did not expect major problems and still believe that they are rare. Not data was lost in both cases and I took no longer than half a day to complete the upgrades (yes - half a day for both together, not each). The machine with the bigger problem has a long history (first install was SEC3.0) and is also shared with another application using SQL. So the failure is perhaps not the installer's fault at all.

    Good luck, Mark

  • Thanks a lot, guys.

    I appreciate your help :)

  • I've successfully upgraded the installation. I could not use backupdb - it reported a connection failure.

So I took a chance and ran the installer anyway. I also had a little trouble with the user account to use. I followed the information in the article about finding the account name in the registry, but the key was empty. I used the SophosAdministrator account in the end.

I'm presently upgrading all the machines to V10.

Thanks again for the help, folks.

    Enjoy your holidays :)

  • Hi Mark

Are you able to upgrade the clients to V10 via the Sophos Enterprise Console?

Any problems that you have come across?

I'm about to upgrade from 9.5 to 10.

    Many Thanks

    Steve

  • Hi, Steve

The upgrades went very smoothly across all the clients in our domain - Win2k, WinXP, WinVista and Win7 and across our servers Win2k3R2 and W2k8 Standard.

Just one client (WinXP) was being reported in the console as being offline when in fact it was switched on. Re-protecting the client sorted that out. I just re-installed over the present installation.

    No problems so far.

  • HI,

If you just want to test the server upgrade works in a test environment first that should be fine.
