Does Sophos perform any background scanning or does it strictly rely on scheduled scans and on access scans?

What I am trying to find out is if Sophos clients continuously scan for infected files in the background while a user is on their machine. I know that files are scanned when a scheduled scan is run and when a file is opened (on access scan) but if the on access scan is disabled and there is no scheduled scan will the client still scan the computer on a regular basis?
