Background scanning

Does Sophos perform any background scanning or does it strictly rely on scheduled scans and on access scans?

  • Hi,

Like scan system (kernel) memory?  This runs a scan of kernel memory every hour.

    http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/63923.aspx references it.

  • What I am trying to find out is if Sophos clients continuously scan for infected files in the background while a user is on their machine. I know that files are scanned when a scheduled scan is run and when a file is opened (on access scan) but if the on access scan is disabled and there is no scheduled scan will the client still scan the computer on a regular basis?

  • Hello RickD,

interesting question. Apart from the memory scan Jak's mentioned there is no background (or "idle") scanning. It would be of limited use - if you forgo on-access scanning (probably for performance reasons) you'd likely want such a scan to run at a very low priority. Depending on the number of files this might take ages to crawl through the file system. The possible economic use of resources would not outweigh the increased risk though.

If you decide to use neither on-access nor scheduled scans Sophos won't overrule your decision and sneakily perform a scan regardless. After all, this could bring about the very issues you want to avoid by not enabling any scanning.
