Windows XP The installation could not be started [0x0000002e]

Hi all,

We're new to Sophos. We've been pushing the agent out this week. Our Win7 clients have been a breeze, but we get the error mentioned in the subject on all 1500 of our XP workstations.

I've gone through the startup guide, which contains the following in section 11.1.3:

3. On Windows XP SP2 or later computers:
a) Ensure that the Remote Registry, Server, Computer Browser, and Task Scheduler services
are started. All automatic and started
b) Ensure that the C$ admin share is enabled. Shared and tested remotely
c) Ensure that Simple File Sharing is turned off. Yes
d) Enable File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks. Yes
e) Ensure that TCP ports 8192, 8193, and 8194 are open. We turn the Win firewall off with GPol
f) Restart the computer to make the changes effective.

I called support can was told the same instructions. There has to be something else at work here, as I can run the install on XP PCs that were clean installs, just not these 1500 that were imaged together.

We migrated from Novell/Zenworks a year ago. Maybe there's remnants of that blocking the install?

Thanks for any ideas!

  • HI,

    A good test would be....

    From the Sophos Management server, log in as the account your attempting to deploy to the client as in the deployment wizard, then try accessing the clients scheduled tasks;

    \\NetBIOSNameOfTestClient\

That should open a Explorer window, then go into the scheduled tasks, right click and try and create a task, to run a test command.  Does that work?

Maybe there is something wrong with the task scheduler on the clients?  Something like:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/246183?

The other option is to use group policy to initiate the install of Sophos as part of a startup script: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/13090.aspx.  To get the install string, deploy to one computer using SEC, monitor the scheduled tasks on the client, when the task is created take a look at the properties.  That is the command you need, you can cross reference: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/12570.aspx.

    Regards,

    Jak

  • Hello Jak,

Thank you very much for the prompt reply.

I was able to access the Task Scheduler opn the remote client from the server, and schedule a basic task (open a command prompt), but the tasks never run, so I suppose that's where we're getting hung up. I'll check out the tech note you referenced. If that doesn't solve it we can certainly go the GPol route.

    Thanks again. I'll report back.
