Data Control slowdown on PCs

Hi,

I have recently tried enabling data control, logging all MS office documents.  However, it appears to be causing a noticeabe slowdown on several computers, disabling appears to speed them back up, so it does seem this is the cause.

Excel will lag when putting entries in and Outlook is being unresponsive, when simply trying to open an email.

Is there anything I can do to help speed things up, or something else which might be causing this.

I am using the latest version of everything. Console v5.1 and EDP v10.2

Thanks

  • Hello fvd_rs, could you let me know your OS and typical System Spec you are seeing this on? I suspect it may be a resourcing issue but would like further information before passing this oer to a dev team.

  • HI,

2 of the computers which are having problems both have Office 2007 Enterprise SP3.

The Outlook issue one is running Vista SP2, the Excel issue one is XP SP3.  Both have a similar spec hardware wise, 2GB of RAM and a oldish Core 2 I believe.

Does this help or do you need any more info?

  • HI,

How many rules do you have?

If you remove rules one at a time and see how it goes, is there a particular rule you can issolate as having the impact?

    Are they all Sophos rules?

    Regards,

    Jak

  • It is just the one rule we have, and just looking at Office documents.  Excel, word, powerpoint

  • Hi,

Within your SAV policy, under on-access scanner, if you enable the setting to exclude ‘‘‘‘All remote files’’’’ does that make any difference? There are some shared setting between the SAV and Data Control policies because they both use the same on access scanning functionality in the engine.

    Best regards,

  • Does that effect the ability of Data control to log/block files on users computers?

I will enable the exclude remote files to see if this makes a difference.

  • It means that files copied from network storage locations won't be scanned - only those stored locally on the host endpoint - so there is an impact on detection. If the problem persists then I'd recommend contacting support and they can collect some debug logs to try and work out what is causing the performance impact.

    Best regards.
