Warehouse Directory Question

Greetings,

I have an administrator that stored an important file in \\servername\sophosupdate\warehouse\ The file is not related to Sophos and it has now disappeared.

Does Sophos clean this directory or purge it somehow?

I also noticed in the Event Viewer that an updated version of Sophos Update Manager was installed briefly before the file went missing. "An updated version of Sophos Update Manager has been installed successfully."

Could this have cleaned out the warehouse directory?

I know this sounds really ridiculous. I appreciate any answers.

Thanks, Lou

  • Hello Lou,

the Warehouse is used by SUM (AutoUpdate might also use a Warehouse folder but in a different location) as (intermediate) store for downloads from the parent warehouse (Sophos distribution network or a parent SUM). It has a logical structure (catalogs and checksums) which is (partially) reflected by the physical. These are used to verify the consistency of the download. As you might have read, clearing the Warehouse manually is sometimes recommended when SUM update errors are encountered. (Partial or complete) cleanup and subsequent redownload or a rebuild might be performed by SUM whenever it "thinks" this is expedient (although no details are given AFAIK).

Whatever not belonging to the structure is placed there is not guaranteed to survive - in fact, it's likely to "disappear" without notice. In general (not restricted to Sophos) one shouldn't put anything under %ProgramData% or distribution shares unless told to do so.

Simply curiosity: Just why would one store are file in this location especially when it is not related to Sophos?
