Uninstalling Sophos is not working...

I've had Sophos for about 2 years now through my school, and am literally 8 days away from finishing.

No more than two days ago, I noticed the icon for the shortcut of Sophos was missing - it was just that default windows icon for an executable program now.

So, I decided I would just uninstall it in case something was wrong and since I was about to graduate from school.  I came to this website and followed the instructions to uninstall it (http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/12360.html).  I uninstalled Alupdate.exe first, just as the instructions said to do, successfully.  Then when I tried to uninstall the anti-virus component, Error 3005 came up saying I did not have Administrator rights to uninstall Sophos.

So I checked the administrator group for Sophos, turns out I do have rights, so I don't know what's going on.

As of now, Sophos anti-virus and remote management system are still installed, but there is no icon in the tray to indicate Sophos is running (even after restaring my laptop), yet I can still access the actual program from the icon on the desktop.  Only Savservice, exe is running, no Almon.exe or anything else Sophos-related.

I would like to remove this program, but I don't know what to do  (I know more than the average person about computers, but I don't feel confident changing too much or anything like that).  Please help me!

    Version 9.5

    Windows XP 32 bit

    Thanks for the help.

  • Hello conserve,

looks like it should work. Did you already uninstall the other Sophos components and it's Anti-Virus which refuses? I can't remember having seen this problem under the conditions you describe. Could you please paste a few lines (about 20 or so) from the uninstall log starting at the line containing Doing action: CheckUserIsSophosAdmin?  Dunno if this will provide any insight though.

  • I first uninstalled the auto update and then moved on to sophos anti-virus where I ran into the problems. As far as I can see, sophos anti-virus is all that remains on my system.

How do I see the uninstall log? I've just been running "add/remove Programs".

  • Hello conserve,

    the logs are in \Windows\Temp

  • I'm sorry. I can't figure out how to access the logs you're referring to.

Would I be wrong in assuming that running another antivirus program in addition to my old Sophos subscription would be detrimental?

    Any other ideas?  Thanks again.

  • Hello conserve,

Windows Explorer (not IE) should take you to C:\Windows\Temp - sorting by Date Modified you should easily be able to locate the logs.

    running another antivirus program

Not a good idea, while there shouldn't be conflicts if you turn off all on-access scanning it's not a clean solution. BTW - where did you obtain Sophos?

  • Strangely, the temp files only show some Sophos Install Logs from last month (presumably when I first uninstalled the auto-updater)... It only shows intall logs that appear to show activity updating the software and a series of "customActions Log 130326".

I got the computer from a family member who used to use it at work. His office uses Sophos.

my bad. Indeed, I have just tested, in this situation only a short MSIxxxx.log and a CustomActions log are created in the user's TEMP directory. There's nothing more in them than the failed check for SophosAdministrator rights. Dunno what checks the CustomAction performs in detail (and in comparison to savmain which provides the GUI and does see you as admin).

I could think of one or more things to try but as they are untested I'd rather not post them publicly. Please PM me (and make sure you have PM turned on - by default it isn't) if you're interested.

  • This has to be one of the most horrible products ever made. Not only did it slow everything down it's harder to get rid of than any spyware. Even an enterprise admin isn't allowed to uninstall the product... STAY AWAY!

  • Ok so i am in the same situation but i do not have a local group with sophos and when i tried to create it through command prompt it says access is denied. I am the only owner and the admin of this computer.
