Outlook 2003 / Exchange 2003 - 1-2 min delay when forwarding a message with graphics

Hello.

We've been running Sophos for several years, but recently upgraded to Endpoint Security and Control version 9, with Control Center 4.0.0.2362.  One client is experiencing a 1 to 2 minute delay when forwarding or replying to an Outlook 2003 message that contains embedded graphics.  The in-house mail server is Exchange 2003.  No other clients are experiencing this, and of course, this is the business owner's computer.

Fixes?  Patches?  Exceptions?  I already excluded outlook.exe on the client - no change.

Thanks in advance.

  • I would like to add:  A search of the MS Exchange boards showed a lot of issues with other AV products, but no posts regarding Sophos.

  • My ms outlook emails are very numerous. But yesterday evening I lost almost all of them. I started seeking for a tool, which would resolve my question. It was rapidly found out. Such tool might be use for any other difficult situation ... link removed.

Sorry to edit your post, but we (like Digital Corner) don't allow advertising in SophosTalk. I'm sure your products are excellent, but if we allow one advert, it would never stop. Thanks for your understanding.

  • Hi,

The first thing I would do is narrow down the component causing the delay.  I.e what can you change to alleviate the problem, this should at least put you in the right area.

    E.g.

Test 1. Set all the options to default.

Any improvement?  If so what settings were changed?

Test 2. Disable the on-access scanner and attempt the same operation.  Any quicker?  You would expect it to be always slightly quicker but is it significant enough to suggest a problem with on-access?

If it is on-access scanning that is casuing it I would probably run Process Monitor (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645) whilst performing the operation and see exaclty what is going on, which files are read, written, etc.  Process Monitor has a great option under "Tools - File summary" menu for understanding the most read and written files during a capture.  Could possibly suggest an exclusion worth trying.

Maybe an option under the advanced settings of on-access could help?  I think if you can narrow it down to a specific setting that would help Support out quite a bit when you contact them.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Jak
