Auto Update Failure

Hello,

I have Sophos Endpoint and Security Control version 9.7 on a Windows 7 machine!

I am having a problems checking for updates. I right click on it to update, and it can't connecot to the server.  How do I configure the auto update to work?

  • Hello mr_ivoryz ,

    the first place to turn to is your site's Sophos administrator (assuming you are an "end-user"). There is no general update configuration, it's always site-specific.

  • Christian,

    My University allows students to download the software as part of the IT Software for students. Do i need to contact my IT department about updating it? Would the university be my administrator?

    :17585
  • Would the university be my administrator?

    Guess so. A working configuration should either be supplied with the download or come with the documentation.

  • Hello Xavier,

    please check if you can access  http://es-web-2.sophos.com/update/catalogue/sdds.esc97.xml using a browser.

    Christian

    :17685
  • Yes I can access it, I got this information in the xml file :

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
    <catalogue xmlns="badger:catalogue">
    <file>
    <md5 extent="x000">041b75730bb58221b2d933fb8a9b096e</md5>
    </file>
    <sig>
    <md5 extent="x000">4cd5ec7f0ad9c61e01b155acd7a799bd</md5>
    </sig>
    </catalogue>

  • Hello Xavier,

    I'm able to get the same error messages by configuring an invalid proxy. Can't test how it behaves the other way round - i.e. no proxy configured for the update location but you need one. So please check if AutoUpdate uses the same proxy settings as Windows (or your browser).

  • Hi Christian,

    Still no luck, I got the same config on both, no proxy or automatic settings ticked. I still got the same errors.

    I got the problem on 2 different computers, one with W7 pro 64bits connected to an Orange ADSL line and one with a W7 family premium 64bit connected to a Free ADSL line (both French ISP)

    I also tried from our company network and got the same error too.

    That's why I dont't think it's related to my environment, I got some others friend having the same issue too since end of september.

    Rgds

  • Looking at the timestamps

    Trace(2011-Oct-09 09:02:49): TrySyncProduct, Calling BeginSync
    Trace(2011-Oct-09 09:03:33): SDDSUpdateLocation caught exception ...
    Trace(2011-Oct-09 09:03:33): TrySyncProduct, Calling BeginSync
    Trace(2011-Oct-09 09:04:18): SDDSUpdateLocation caught exception ...

    approximately 45 seconds elapse until the error. This looks like a timeout. As you can access the server and file using a browser it shouldn't happen (unless e.g. a local firewall just drops the packets from or to alupdate.exe).So still no successful update since Sunday?

    Using TcpView you should be able see alupdate.exe trying to connect and wait - and if you at the same time (45 seconds should be long enough) you are able to get the file with a browser then - well, then I have to think of some explanation  :smileyhappy:
