How do you configure an Update Manager without Internet access ?

I am trying to configure my Update Manager but I do not have direct access to the Sophos website.

I have installed SophosEnterpriseConsole_4.5.

I have copies of Warehouse and CIDs from a Server that does have access to the Sophos website so I have copied these onto my Server's "SophosUpdateManager" share.

I now want to edit my "Recommended" Subscription and select "Windows 2000 and above" but I can not get to the form where you do this. I get a message telling me to run the Download Security Software Wizard to configure the local update manager to download from Sophos. But as I don't have access to the Internet this is no use to me.

I am sure that in the past all I had to do was manually populate the "SophosUpdateManager" share but I am obviously missing something.

Can anybody tell me what I need to do ?

Thanks

  • Thanks for the reply Jak,

I'll go and have another try but I think I've done everything that is described in that article.

My problem comes at Step 6. of the procedure described
"6. Configure your software subscriptions to use the appropriate packeges
    "

: I just can't seem to get to the page where I do that.

I'll try again and get back to you.

  • Hello Peter,

what is the problem you encounter - do you get an error message or is the list empty? Could you perhaps provide a screenshot of the Update Managers view (has it a date in the Last updated column?).

  • Hello Christian,

    thanks for getting back.

The problem is I just can't get to the page where I edit the Subscription.

I've put a "Warehouse" in my SophosUpdateManager share and edited the "Sources" (SophosUpdateManager) and "Subscription" (Recommended) tabs of the Update Manager  but having done that I can't edit the "Recommended" subscription.

I seem to be permanently stuck with "At least one update manager must be configured to update from Sophos before you can create or modify software subscriptions".

The Update manager view shows "Software Update failed" ; Last Updated = "Never"; Configuration = "Matches".

  • Hello Peter,

I see. I have set up a VM to test how SEC5.0 behaves and if I either can reproduce this behaviour or make it work as we want. It is still chugging along though. Meanwhile I can just guess. Any details on why the Software Update failed?

Apart from this - wonder if At least one update manager must be configured to update from Sophos ... means it doesn't find what it expects in the Warehouse (in other words, the Warehouse is corrupt) or if it really insists that Sophos as source is somewhere in the hierarchy (but if it then works without an actual connection to Sophos this would seem weird). Just for the fun of it - what happens if you really add Sophos as a source?

I'll post again once I have results.

  • Hi Christian,

I think I've found the answer : I didn't have the Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Share service running.

Once I had turned that on I was able to get to the Edit Subscriptions page and select Windows 2000 and above.

It's busy downloading binaries etc. as we speak so I think it's going to be OK now.

  • Fine, Peter

just curious - did the logs contain information about the failed connection to the source?

Stumbled over a different error where the message wasn't very helpful: "Failed to check update source status: 'Couldn't create catalogue sdds.local' ". Well, I'd accidentally shared the Warehouse folder instead of its container thus SUM failed to recognize the Warehouse (I think the message is misleading).

  • Can you remind me where the log files are located ?

  • Hello Peter,

logviewer.exe (in the SUM program folder) shows a condensed log of SUM's activity. The (detailed) SUMTrace logs are in [%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data|%PROGRAMDATA%]\Sophos\Update Manager\Logs .
