Address Update server Sophos

Hi,

to avoid the use of a proxy we need the full address of the Sophos server (which we're using as second update server). Now it is set as Sophos, nothing else. Who can help us?

  • Hello Jo,

you're talking about endpoints? What's the problem with using a proxy the proxy other applications (have to) use?

Anyway the names are now dci.sophosupd.com and dci.sophosupd.net. Please see this article for details (some parts don't apply to endpoint updating).

  • Hi Christian, yes we're talking about endpoints, notebooks to be exact. And when they are on a mission (for instance we just had someone in Tanzania) there is another proxy, or no proxy at all. So for the computers at our plce, there is no problem at all, only for the one abroad.

  • Hello Jo,

AutoUpdate (on Windows) doesn't use the system proxy (if you configure one in the update settings you can't bypass it - i.e. if you require an explicit proxy in your network the same proxy is used when the laptops are somewhere else ).

Anyway - Sophos is "translated" to the mentioned names which in turn are resolved to one or more addresses depending on the nameservers used. Thus the effect would be the same. Furthermore the names used for the generic Sophos address could be changed without notice, they are not meant to be entered explicitly.

If a (different) proxy is required or none available at a remote location the Proxy Details in Configure updating have to be changed as appropriate. Fiddling with the address will get you nowhere.

  • The goal of our network admin would be to allow a direct connection for accessing the sophos server, so that way we don't need to set a proxy in the settings.

  • Ah, I think I see now. You want the Sophos address to work from inside your network without specifying a proxy, correct?

Normally a firewall enforces the use of a proxy and a decent firewall allows exceptions by DNS name, if not (and you don't want to make all the exceptions in the article) note the addresses the dci-names resolve to. BTW - I've just found out that the addresses I get are not in the article's list so you better look them up anyway.
