Endpoint 10 Web control & Patch Details : No details appear / doesn't work

Enterprise console version : 5.0.0.8

Endpoint client version : 10

I'm looking to test out the integrated Web Control and Patch details options built into the latest enterprise console. I've created test policies and applied them to a machine (windows 7) but nothing appears to happen.

Looking on the Enterprise console the tabs for web control & patch details are present but only the Group field has any data in it.

I've tested pretty much everything I can find relating to this but no joy. Services appear correct on client and pointing web browser to sophos test site blocks the malware (as it did on previous version) and I get a Web Event count +1 agsint the machine on the console.

However, for my test I've enabled Web control and set everything to block. I've also added facebook.com to the website exception list to Block but this doesn't appear to work.

Am I missing something?

Thanks.

  • Sounds like your not licenced to use the web control and patch features. I was also looking forward to using the patch reporting feature; but turns out my licence doesn't cover this. This was one of the reasons I was so keen on updating the endpoints to version 10.  Bit of a let down if you ask me!

  • Thanks for the reply.

Wow I can't believe that after all the fanfare and pushing of this new feature it's a seperate license. None of the documentation or literature I have seen points to this and even setup of the product appears that you only need a seperate service if you are using the 'Full' features.

    Indeed a very big letdown!

I spent a whole day yesterday troubleshooting a failed upgrade of our Management console / database so I could test these features.

  • Hello m,

you did install these two components on the machines, didn't you? Everything blank except Group suggests they are not installed.

[Edit: got interrupted when writing the reply so I didn't see the response before posting - RogueViper thought of the most likely cause ... :smileytongue:.]

Seriously, SEC does give the impression that everything is available to you and this is somewhat disappointing (with 5.1 you'll also see Encryption, yet another license required feature). Please see Sophos Licensing changes for details.

  • I've upgraded the clients in question to 10? Is this not the same procedure?

It had crossed my mind that the software hadn't updated completey.

If i push the install to a machine my options are :

Application control, anti virus, data control, device control, HIPS

    firewall

    complience control

    third party security software detection

Which of these (if any) does web control fall under?

    Thanks.

Apologies if I've missed a basic step.

  • Hello m,

    I've already edited my post.

If (that is if, from what you say you don't) you have the required licenses Web Control is installed as part of the base product (listed after HIPS), Patch has its own checkbox (like SCF and NAC). The add-ons are not a exactly steal and while I regret this I can't say it's unreasonable given the features added over the recent years at practically no cost.

  • Thanks Christian.

Paying for services is not a problem and the roll out of features is always welcome. If something is classed as useful for my company then I normally evaluate and create a proposal accordingly.

Obviously, the web filtering is a very useful feature and one that 'appears' to be included in the latest version.

As it appears I am not the only customer to misinterpret this it may be useful for Sophos to clarify.

    Thanks for your help.

  • You're welcome.

As additional information - you can request a free 30-day trial any time. It includes all currently available components. You just have to enter the credentials you'll receive by mail in your update manager configuration (best way is to add another update location with source Sophos and move it to the top). This should make the additional features available for testing within hours :smileyhappy:. To be sure please check with your sales rep.

  • As additional information: Just  "discovered" that Web Control is included if you have licensed one of the non-Basic Protection Suites (i.e. Email Protection in addition to an Endpoint Advanced license - but don't ask me how existing licenses have been migrated - SEC doesn't tell me I have a Suite (but maybe wearing a suit is required for seeing this).

While I was writing this the article has been updated (and got a new suitdesign). Can no longer find Web Control, Just Patch. Guess I'll wait a few more days until the changes (looked at the Downloads section lately?) have abated and then take another look ...
