System Requirements for Enterprise Console

Having read a lot about Sophos Endpoint 10 coming out soon, I checked out the knowledgebase for the system requirements for Enterprise Console installation.

Currently we have EC 4.7.0.13 installed on a Windows XP workstation as:

1. It is not recommended to be installed on a domain controller and
2. Even if it was Windows Server 2003 will not allow you to install MS SQL Server 2008R2 (free version).

Now it seems that the specifications no longer include Windows XP for EC only  a minimum of Windows 7 (with XP mode).

It may seem that we're a bit behind the times with our kit, 1 x Windows 2003 Server (Domain Controller) and all PC's running Windows XP, but this kit is less than 5 years old and we as a small business cannot afford to update all the kit just so we can install one or two items of software which have been updated, Sophos is not the only one.

So my question is, can the latest version of Enterprise Controller (whatever that version is) be installed on a Windows XP workstation as it is running for us now and if not, will EC 4.7 support Sophos Endpoint 10 and allow us to continue to use Sophos in this way?

  • Hello IanL,

XP is no longer supported for the Management Server and Database component. Database requirement is SQL 2005 so if you manually install this version before installing SEC it should work. You can use V10 with SEC 4.7 but of course without the added features (which likely would require an addition to your license anyway).

  • Thanks for the reply Christian. We did need the added features of SE 10 so I took the bull by the horns and try the install on my XP Workstation.

    1. I backed up my whole PC (Disk Image)

    2. Downloaded SEC_5 and ran it.

During the install process it did ask for the XP Install CD so it could install Microsoft Message Queueing but otherwise the install went stright through with no problems.

I'm using MS SQL Server 2008 R2 on this PC and that connected correctly.

Have now updated the whole network to SE 10.

So the answer is you can indeed use XP as the server for EC 5 despite it not being in the specification. I do appreciate XP's status and how it's not supported by a number of technologies nowadays and one day we'll have to update to Windows whatever but for now, if it ain't broke we don't fix it. Patch maybe but replace nearly new kit? No.

  • Hello Ian,

in no way I ever suggested it could work - so let's state once more this is an unsupported environment ;). And the new managemnt server components do work (didn 't have time during the Beta to gice it a try on XP)?
    Thanks for sharing your experience
