Tamper protection toggle will not switch off - trying to uninstall / reinstall Sophos Central Client

Hi I am trying to re-install Sophos Central on a client as the updates kept failing, I was advised to re-install the software which I did after turning off the Tamper Protection successfully on the client. However when trying to update I got the message 'ERROR: Could not find a source for updated packages.'. I've restarted the client and server but still get the same message.

I've logged in with admin rights and done the following:-

I've tried to uninstall the Sophos software but I am unable to turn off the Tamper Protection - in the Settings screen I have logged in as admin, I've overridden Sophos Central Policy, I can turn off Tamper Protection on the toggle so it is greyed out but as soon as I click on Events and then go back to Settings the Tamper toggle button has gone green, i.e. it appears as if it hasn't remembered the setting, am I meant to click something after I have greyed out the toggle button?

If I just try to reinstall the Sophos Installation file I eventually get a message saying to turn off Tamper Protection first.

I'm now at a loss as to what to do....Jeremy

  • You should be able to locate the device in Sophos Central and disable tamper protection from there.  This will send down a policy to disable it.

If for whatever reason, the computer has been remove in Sophos Central or MCS is broken you can disable it locally but it has to be done in Safe mode as per this article:

  • Hi thanks for suggesting that, I did try turning off tamper protection in Sophos Central - Devices but the client was still saying it was on, I did have to manually turn it back on in SC-D after and still the same. I will try the Reg Settings in Safe Mode but this will have to wait till Monday as I'm guessing I can't do this remotely.  Regards Jeremy
