Update and Relay servers

We're starting to deploy Sophos Central, and set up a server in each remote site as an update and relay server. I understand that it's supposed to go to the fastest server, but for some reason if a system is being imaged in our main office or AV being deployed, it's not necessarily pulling from the local server. We ended up having systems pulling from a small site with a 3 mbps connection.

How can we ensure that a system is pulling from what is actually the best server? I know that I can manually assign one to an endpoint, but we have users that travel between offices, so we want it to be more dynamic.

  • I think I figured it out, we were thinking the calculation was on network speed and latency, not just IP number. So a remote site with a 3mbps connection has an IP range closer than our server range at the main office. So, this would work at remote sites, if we have a server at each one (assuming it's not down). That won't work at the main site, and we can't be manually assigning an update cache per machine.

How can we ensure that systems only use a local cache?
