Update and Relay servers

We're starting to deploy Sophos Central, and set up a server in each remote site as an update and relay server. I understand that it's supposed to go to the fastest server, but for some reason if a system is being imaged in our main office or AV being deployed, it's not necessarily pulling from the local server. We ended up having systems pulling from a small site with a 3 mbps connection.

How can we ensure that a system is pulling from what is actually the best server? I know that I can manually assign one to an endpoint, but we have users that travel between offices, so we want it to be more dynamic.

  • A few devices are showing on Sophos Central as using the local server, 4 of them. Another 78 are using a particular remote site, there are not nearly that many systems there on Sophos. Before, they were using a different server, which alphabetically came before the one they're using now. We disabled the update cache on that server and they ended up moving down the line to another remote server.

Since there are devices on the local cache server I'd think it'd meet the requirements, and looking at them I don't see any it doesn't meet.
