"Scan this MAC" hangs / stuck

I've been running "Scan this MAC" for about 20 hours.

It stuck on roughly half of all files.

The total number was 2.5M files, now the counter (remaining) is at 1.3M and is staying there for many hours.

(No I don't scan external / nw drives, just one plane local hd).

I can accept an argument such as "probably it is working on some [huge | complex | demanding] file but:

A) there is no visual clue about it (at least displaying the name of such file is a must in such situation is a must I think);

B) there is no way to stop the program (leaving aside Force Quit): the "Stop Scan" button does NOTHING.

This is frustrating, The lack of minimal documentation makes it worse.

  • Thanks for the feedback.  I've answered your other post and that covers how to reduce the number of files SAV has to scan - generally it's (and I'm totally guessing your situation here) that a Time Machine is connected (or another backup or external drive) and SAV hits that and slows down as it works through the files.

    Have a look at the Help board on this forum for read-only posts (e.g., more documentation).  For example there is one about seeing what files SAV is actually scanning.

  • Thank you Ruckus for your prompt reply. It would be very helpful to me, but... alas... :-)
    You say that it "covers how to reduce the number of files SAV has to scan" but it doesn't. I nmy case that is.

    1) as I already pointed out (see the OP), I don't have or scan any external / network drives, no Time Machine is running, no other backups, wi-fi, bluetooth, ethernet, usb, firewire or any other drives or disks or cassettes or vinyls,
      -- just one local HD;

    2) the idea of narrowing down search of "misbehaving" files (aka stopping / slowing down to the crawl / making hang the SAV) has actually entered my mind before. Before my 1st post it was.
    But in order to implement it, I'd have to do some iterations of the following sequence:
      a) find an instance of "bad" file/folder (s);
      b) move / remove it / them;
      c) restart the scan;

    -- which I cannot do, as (-- as I also have pointed out earlier --):
      -- there is no way to find out what the "bad" files are and, much more importantly,
      -- there is NO WAY to stop and restart the scan.

    Please read my OP:  the "Stop Scan" button does NOTHING. Absolutely nothing. Zip. Nada. Nenio.

    Note that with the Stop Scan button working properly, I could do some guessing, narrow down search and probably after a couple hours find "offensive files" without the Scan dialog showing them to me, -- but what am I supposed to do without the Stop actually stopping ?
    killing -9 things? reinstalling? uninstalling?..

    BTW: sweep -dn cannot help me here as it has no knowledge about the UI running (that's my guess but I can bet on it).

    (and BTW: saying  "look at the old read-only forum, search for 'what files SAV is actually scanning' in it, then watch a video...
    -- is a funny way to say "run sweep -dn" to see what files are being processed).

  • Good Morning:

                            I am having the same issues with Sophos. Did you resolve the problem? If so could you please update this post.

    Thanks in advance - Mark K.
