Uninstall Sophos Ant-Virus v8 without removal tool

I want to remove Sophos AVv8 from my MAc, but don't have the removal tool as I (stupidly) deleted all the Sophos files from my mac in an earlier attempt to uninstall. I got Sophos as a free download via my university, which I left a year ago, so no longer have the license info etc.

Is there any other way of uninstalling Sophos?

  • You could try reinstalling the version you originally had installed (run the installer from your uni again over the top).  You don't say whether you still have that.

There is the SophosRemove.tgz linked on this thread...

..but that may not work though you can give it a try.

Otherwise does version 9 not install over the top of the existing half-install?

  • Hi, I have exactly the same problem. I got the sophos antivirus v8 installed previously from my school IT administrator. I didn't know how to remove it properly in the first place. I used an application called appCleaner to unistall Sophos. I thought that I have a clean unistall. But when I tried to install the V9 Sophos Home Ediion, the "incompatible product was installed" message popped up. I read through the Sophos Freetalk. I downloaded the V8 sophos unistaller and tried to use it to do a proper uninstallation. But then it says "Sophos Antivirus is not installed". The install log still claims that "the opm product is already installed, please uninstall it before installing the home edition". I looked at the library folder, there is no more sophos antivirus folder anymore. I can't go back to the school IT administrator to ask him to install back the v8 sophos for me as I have already left the high school. So I am caught in this catch-22 situation. It looks like the V8 is gone but the V9 HE installer thinks it is still there. What can I do ? Sophos is such a good product that I don't really want to give it up..Any way to get around this situation ?? Let me know...Thank you very much

Have you tried downloading the v9 removal tool?
